The Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) is seeking a Marine and Fisheries Scientist who will be responsible to the Director of Fisheries/ Senior Executive for undertaking science in support of GSGSSI fisheries and marine environmental management. Fisheries for Patagonian toothfish, mackerel icefish and Antarctic krill are established in South Georgia waters and are managed in an ecosystem-based approach to take account of the demands of predators such as penguins and seals.

Duties will include:
(i) Data collation and analysis;
(ii) Organisation and participation in research cruises;
(iii) Analyses of biological samples;
(iv) Preparation of reports and papers for CCAMLR Working Groups
(v) Short deployments on commercial fishing vessels as an observer or to
collect additional data and samples
(vi) Liaison with GSGSSI's scientific contractors

The successful candidate will be an experienced, numerate and adaptable marine/fisheries biologist (minimum MSc in Marine or Fisheries Biology).
Ideally they will have knowledge and experience of South Georgia fisheries, ecosystem approaches to fisheries management, stock assessments and inter-actions between fisheries and non-target species. They must have good communication skills with the ability to produce high quality reports and scientific papers.

The successful candidate must be responsible, well motivated and able to work independently with confidence, sometimes in demanding conditions. A positive mental attitude and enthusiastic approach to the duties are important attributes. The successful candidate must be physically fit and will be required to pass a statuary medical examination.



Salary will be in the range £24,000 - £30,000 depending on experience. On
completion of each year of service a gratuity of 25% of earnings will be paid.
