    Pompano Dolphin?

I was visiting a small museum recently and saw this mount with a sign saying it was a "Pompano Dolphin." I've never caught one, but I think this is maybe a common dolphin? It was probably 36" and 15 Lbs or more.

This has always been a topic of interest for me too. From what I have gathered, a Pompano looks pretty much the same as a common Dolphin, only the Pompanos are smaller and have a small patch of teeth on their tounge. Supposedly this is a picture of a couple Pompanos...Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

...Compares Regular to Pompano, bottom fish being Pompano...

The fish in the original pic is not a pompano dolphin. Just a standard one. We caught the current world record pompano dolphin during the OCWMO a couple years ago. Just short of nine pounds. The previous record was about 7 1/2.

I figured you'd know the deal Deep. So is that a "Bull Pompano"? Weird looking little guy.

We had the cow too. She broke the old record by a couple ounces but the boy fish had it beat by a pound plus. Boat's owner thought I was full of shit... The fish came over the side and I told him right then... "Theres your world record."
"Thats not even a good sized dolphin. Record? Your nuts!"
"Thats not a dolphin. Its a pompano dolphin and I'm pretty sure it has the record beat..."
Even the IGFA rep at the tourney had no clue. Had to go on line to look it up...

We catch em mixed in with schoolies here in Florida but very rare to get one over about three pounds. That bull and his cow were the only ones I ever saw up north. Previous record came from Bermuda...

I'm sure I have bailed a few of those over the years and not even known what I was slingin' in the box. I'll be checking tounges from now on for teeth!

Sometimes they sneak in a pile and don't get recognized. Their flesh is very white as opposed to the slight pinkish tint of regular mahi... Not gonna say it better eating as such. Just different looking...
