The Potomac Conservancy released a report this week detailing hormonal changes in fish in the Potomac. They are finding male bass growing eggs . It has been attributed to pollutants in the river. They feel that one pollutant is not to blame but rather the mix of several pollutants in the river.
The pollutants range from animal and chemical fertilizers and waste from humans. Lately the federal govt has been concerned about pharmaceuticals in the water. Discarded pharmaceuticals are one source. Many pharmaceuticals enter the water through human urine or feces. Many drugs like female hormones are excreted in the urine and many drugs have active metabolites that end up in the urine.
New recommendations are to refrain from flushing old drugs down the toilet. The best way now seems to be to mix the drugs with coffee grounds, wet kitty litter or other substance that Makes reuse hard.
