Think Marty was referring to chichiuas. I've never seen a meaner species of "dog". All dogs of the larger variety are friendlier if trained right. I have a terrific black lab who would die for me. However, I would never put hom in a situation that he could be hurt......hmmmmm.....although this is the same one who bowled me over on the stairs and caused ligament damage. Can't really blame him as he is 12 and has hip displacement. All dog's attitudes are a reflection of their training and care. And the littler they are the meaner they try to be cause they are afraid of you!
I really pity that pit bull because the amount of damage done will probably require him to be put down. Most owners....if you can call them that... who do that to a dog aren't gonna part with their winnings to save the dog.

Wahoo,

I am accustomed to responses like yours, it is typical of someone who has not had much experience with PitBulls.........that is not a dig mind you just a fact. The breed was designed as a fighting dog and that required dog aggression and actually discouraged human aggression. That is difficult for many to swallow considering how the media has portrayed the breed. Having shared my home with 2 and my Uncle having one and having had experinces with hundreds, I can tell you that they are less likely to bite a person than most other dogs, especially that little crappin yapper that bit you so many years ago.

Many think that because a dog is dog aggressive, it must be human aggressive. Dog Aggression is more closely related to animal aggression in general and has no link to human aggression. How many hunting dogs will willingly kill rabbits, badgers, fox, raccoons, even bears and jaguars (there was a dog bred specifically for that purpose!) do you think are considered people biters? It is all a perception problem for the most part. The PitBull is the "every dog" They are all the things people wish thier dogs were/are, you can see it in all the breed standards.............Brave, fearless, courageous, loyal, stable, will defend its family with its life, sound structure, great strength and the list goes on. The reality is the the PitBull embodies all those things. I decided years ago that I will never own another breed, the reasons are many but rather simple really.

I have to agree with Marty on this issue... These dogs have a natural instinct
to kill... not bite but kill.. Some feel that they protect the family they have
been raised with.. there was a story featured here on the local news about
a pit bull [a family pet] that killed the baby of the family. The mother said she laid the
baby down on the floor like she had done many other times [with the dog there] and had to walk to
the kitchen and get the phone. She said it was only seconds later the
baby was screeming and when she came back into the room the dog
had the babies head in its mouth shaking the child.... So I really think that
many of these dogs we feel are "domestic" still have the natural instincts of their wild counterpart. And I dont think it is the owners fault that the dog is
hurt.. it was the instinct to kill is what got the dog hurt.

Just my point of view.

Welp...it's not a Pit Bull...but rather a Bull Terrier. And it is a true story/picture as witnessed here:

http://urbanlegends.about.com/librar..._porcupine.htm

The dog did live. Nothing is said about the porcupine though. lol

I am not going to belabor the point as it does little good especially when someone has deep seated beliefs I will however say just a few tidbits and them I am done.

Box, I agree with you on the dogs pooping all over the place, that is why mine is trained not to do so. It is rude and shows not class at all, that is on top of it being illegal in many areas. You of course have to judge for yourself whether a dog is friendly enough for you to approach, sadly though, many of the dogs that are seen as completely innocuous and safe are the ones most likely to bite while the "BAD" dogs are less likely to do so. What that means is that you might very well be avoiding the wrong dogs! Use your judgement, that is why God gave us the minds that he did. Oh and to clarify another thing that is steeped in media mystery. The AMA I think it is, keep stats on dog bites and fatalities. The news media will of course not print a story that does not sell print. There is nothing sexy about a Lab biting someone, but just the name PitBull has a very sinister ring to it and sells sells sells. Reality is that there ARE reports of Springer spaniels, germain shepherds, dalmations, and yes even Pomeranians killing people, mostly children. Just becasue you don't see it on the news does not mean it doesn't happen. Granted the top 2 dogs when it comes to human fatalities are the PitBull and the Rottweiler (they have been trading the # one spot for a few years) but it may come as a surprise that the consistent # 3 dog has been the Malamute! Odd stuff HUH? Oh and dog fatalities are so low as to be inconsequential really. Between them PitBulls and Rottweilers have killed about 50 people since the 70s...........Bees take many more than that each year.

Surfergirl, You have been very much influenced by the media. ALL dogs have an instinct to kill, it is inherent in their Wolf ancestry. All dog behaviors are nothing more than exxaggerated wolf behavior that has been shaped by man. Hunting dogs have been bred to carry out the single aspect of wolf behavior that is hunting. Some types have been stopped just shy of the kill. For instance, pointers and flushing dogs have been kept in a state of eternal hunt without kill. Other hunting dogs have been bred to hold and in some cases dispatch large game........kill that is. Other dogs were bred to flushout pursue and kill small rodents and such..........some notables would be the Daschund........weiner dog to many of us! A bred to the bone killer of burrowing animals and animals that traveled under dense brush and thicket. Why do you think they are so low to the ground? For fun? Believe it or not PutBulls were originally designed as farm dogs. Thier job was not to kill large domestic animals but to simply subdue it for the Farmers or Butcher. There is a dog in Spain still doing that sort of work by the way......Alano Espanol. It was only later that PitBulls were used as "sporting dogs" in dog fights. Oddly, Fighting is another WOLF behavior that was refined and selected for to create the PitBull you see today. For them, the idea is to fight.......ANOTHER DOG........not to necessarily kill it. the fight is the end.......it is the selected behavior. Wolves fight, but stop when one gives in and submits. Recognition of submission by another dog has been bred out of them so they will continue to fight............Oh and so too has the desire to quit been bred out. What you are left with is a dog suspended in a fight mode, no different than a dog suspended in attack mode..........Rottweilers, Mastiffs, Dalmations, Shepherds, Doberman, and the list goes on.

Well I know that I have just wasted a ton of keystrokes as once someone believes something there is often no changing it especially if it was on the news or in the paper..................interfering with that belief with FACTS is pretty useless.

Oh and just one more thing, Someone researched and found that the dog with the quilled face was not a PitBUll but instead a Bull terrier. Do you feel that Spuds Mckenzie is a killer? Born to KILL? Well news flash, the Bull Terrier and the PitBull were created from similar stock.......the same in some cases......and the Bull Terrier was originally used a a fighter! Dog Fighter that is! They were not very good at it and were then used in the rat pits in England. A rat pit is simple. Many rats were trapped in a pit or encliosure and the dog was introduced. The dog that KILLED the most rats was declared the winner...........sounds like born to kill to me! Jack Russels were also excellent ratters by the way.

Ahh well, none of it will get through anyway.

Hmmm... Lots of conflicting opinions. Yes.... alll dogs descended from wolves. Many breeds were created according to human desires. Man playing God if you will. ALL dogs are capable of trying to kill. My black lab will indeed try to kill to protect me..... if licking them to death is a killing technique.....no serious...he would die to keep me from harm. I had a malamute and they are deadly to most critters. Dogs are TRAINED to kill by people.... unless there is unusual circumstances. Most want to protect ....

And it is the owners fault for not policing after their dog. Some are just too lazy or ignorant. Yes....some breeds have been breed to higher levels of agression or killing. The owner is the one responsible for how they act. it all comes down too... the owner and their actions. One note.... certain hunting, agressive breeds will react to a helpless young one..... normally as their predecessors would have. So ...even though you trust them.... remember what can trigger them.
