I just took a gander at the Dow, 9900 right now. Where is she headed ??
Im thinking 7500 within a month. Im thinkingof waiting it out then snatching up some buys
probably a good idea. I think there is a confluence of things happening; overseas stuff, oil spill, govt regulation of banks. The govt stopped the leading sector which was financials, and the banking regulations have a big cloud over market. Also, alot of people just taking profits for summer. I think you have time, dont think the summer will be good, but will probably rebound in fall. I am buying oil and financials (visa and mastercard, citi) and some tech.
I too was thinking about { C } Citi. The damn stock just seems to be stagnent. Really hasnt moved except down a tad.
Ford is even down from about 2 months ago.
Id like to see F drop to about 5 bucks and buy a shit load.
Very very volitile right now, wish I was shorting.
damnit !!!!!! Just took a look at {POT } Potash Corp. I was going to short it about 3 months ago and I wussed out.
Im a fool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
to short pot or other fertilzer stocks you would have to have point of view that china is going to blow up. That is who and where they sell most of product. Since china's govt controlls the data for GDP etc..it is extremely hard to figure out, but i guess is that at some point china will blow up
all kinding aside, how about a short lesson on the stock market. Never had the money to invest in anything but my immediate business. I will admit that I know nothing about how it work's, or what any of the term's mean. Hoping one day soon to be able to invest for later, right now it's good just to keep going. But who know's. Thank's, Frank
Ill give you a short primer. It has nothing to do with investing. Companies that are broke, the stock goes up, Companies that make money can go down in price. It has nothing to do with logic........its a form of gambling. People leave their money on the table everyday. Unless this image is familiar to you, find another place to play. Ive said it before,.......... its like putting money between the front door and the screen door and checking in the morning to see if its still there.
Frank, Mr. Hubris is correct in a sense but I ll try and elaborate a bit. Perfectscore, chime in and correct me if Im wrong.
Buying a stock is obviously saying you believe the stock will go up at sometime.
Shorting a stock is buying a stock at the selling price and betting that is going to drop in price. You make the difference.
example - [ this is just my .02 ]
I hear in the news that Ford is having problems, whether it be a problem in the factorys, maybe layoffs or their product suddenly becomes crap. This is more than likely a temp issue when in most instances the stock will drop in price.
I snatch up lets just say 1000 shares at $10 per share to short. Im basically betting that the stock is going to take hit.
Now mind you, shorting a stock is, I believe a short term bet.
If I see that the stock dropped $2 per share and I then unload the stock, I just made 2 bucks on each share. If the stocks goes up and I lose my nerve and sell then I lose the difference of the increase.
You can get hurt pretty bad and lose everything in shorting.
Most important !!!!! a stock has no limit to increase but it does have a limit in a decrease.
Shorting , I believe is for fast money.
Buying = long term investment.
Now Im going to really confuse you !!
You put $25000 into an ameritrade account [ to buy stocks ] Ameritrade will give you a Margin.
Margin is like obtaining a marker at the casino. You can use your money plus the margin [ their money ] to buy stock or to short stock. So in essense, your $25K becomes $50K.
So you could not only lose your $25K but an additional $25K.
You could seriously bury yourself.
So do your homework before buying or shorting a stock and never never lose your nerve.
Good luck !!
