Thank you now I understand. Sounds somewhat risky to me. My brother at one time was renting a seat on the commodities exchange. He did it for about 10 years. He lost everything and then some was banned from trading for 3 months and fined $80,000.00. He was supposed to be the smart one out of the two of us (according to my father)

He is now broke on his 3rd divorce, he's moving to Florida. Still looking for the quick easy buck. Good Luck Joe!!

even if you bought a put option to sell at 12 and buy at 10 it still would be a losing trade bc you have to account the cost you paid for it which is called the premium. shorter term contracts have a higher premium that is why it is better to look out further and go deep in the money

Barry you asked the very question that came to mind when I read LT"s explaination. How do you make money on a loss? Sound's like buy "short" is betting against yourself, maybe I don't quite understand it yet. I have seen the way you guy's go with the market, it seem's complicated to me. I guess I get the same thing from folk's that are intimidated by the inside's of an engine. You do it enough and the fuzzie's go away.
It all does seem extremely risky to me, guess that's because I don't have any to loose. I will say that I worked with a guy year's back, that lost $100,000.00 over night and you couldn't tell that it bothered him a bit. Now that was when a hundred grand was a cramp load of money. I couldn't stand it any more and I asked him, "why doesn't your loss drive you absolutely nut's"? He calmly looked at me and said it's "just money, I'll make it back"! And he did. I would have been ready to go postal. I have never forgot that guy or his take on the stock market.
