Pwake, where were you fishing? and where was his home port? An alternative that still would have saved him from being even more stupid would be to tow him to the CLOSEST port.

BTW you banked some Karma points for being a good man.

Certainly anyone can make a mistake. It's not so much the out of gas part that bothers me. It's the swimming idea. I just suspect that this guy's not the crispiest chip in the bag. People who make bad judgement calls like this put others at risk. Like the rescuers who have to go look for them when they don't stumble on a guy like pwake and try swimming 5 mi. with a gas can in their teeth.

I guess I'm being a hard-@$$ too, but it would sure suck if somebody else didn't come home because they ran into a problem while they were out looking for this guy. Sorry for the rant, I'll get off the soapbox now.
IE8 says this may be a phishing site....Well, DUH!!!!!!... Stupid jerks can't even spell fishing right.

I know when I put newer motors on my boat and went offshore for the first time I came through the inlet on E. When I left offshore I had 36 miles to go and a 1/2 a tank of gas but at the inlet I was on E. Later on when I filled the tank back up I had 14 gallons left. Needless to say I learned some things about my fuel guage and my range. Glad you helped him out it will come back to you one day.
Sorry I don't buy that. It is your responsability to know your range and there is no excuse for learning the hard way. Running out of fuel can be a dangerous proposition and you are responsable for the saftey of everyone aboard your boat.

Sorry you don't buy that but I make sure I am responsible for everyone on my boat. I have fished many times in the same waters I was in and only burned 85-90 gallons with 140 hp. When I put on 200's I wasn't for sure of the fuel burn but I knew I would burn more. Like I said previously when I left to run in I had a half of a tank and I had run out to the fishing spots and trolled all day and figured I didn't have anything to worry about. What I did wrong was I kept my motors trimmed all the way down in the rough water instead of trimming them up and letting my trim tabs do the work. I didn't think that this would have ended using as much fuel as it did, but thats what happened. I didn't run out of fuel and in actuality I had 14 gallons left. I just pointing out that I have been scared and even close to running out and it is not a good feeling.
