Oregon Inlet Bouys to be pulled

Press Release Date: May 16, 2007

    (757) 398-6230

COAST GUARD TO BEGIN REMOVAL OF BUOYS IN N.C. INLET

PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Buoys 32 - 37 in Oregon Inlet Channel, N.C., are scheduled for removal by the Coast Guard by the end of the week due to heavy shoaling.

Water depths in this part of the channel have become too shallow and dynamic for Coast Guard buoy tenders to safely operate.

Range 6A serves as an alternate route connecting Oregon Inlet Channel to Old House Channel and is maintaining a depth of 10 feet. Using range 6A instead of range 6 introduces a very minor delay in transit.

The Army Corps of Engineers has conducted surveys which confirmed reports of severe shoaling in Range 6. The floating aids to navigation marking range 6 will be removed no later than Friday, May 18 and lateral dayboards on structures will be replaced with "WARNING" dayboards, denoting unsafe passage for boaters.

    It's about time

I was wondering how long they were going to leave that channel marked. I have seen two big private sportfishers aground in that channel over the past week.
That channel has not been open with any depth since last winter. The other channel they opened that we refer to as the trawl boat channel has plenty of water, I fished thru it yesterday and never saw less than 12 feet even at really low water. The scatter dredge has been working around the edges of that channel keeping it in pretty good shape.

Oregon inlet is pretty well marked but as with any area you really have to pay attention. Old house channel running out to the Pamlico towards Hatteras is well marked also but yesterday there was a guy heading that way and with the current running across the cahannel it pulled him off his course and he went aground. I couldn't get to him to help him so he had to wait on the tide. All I can say is PAY ATTENTION and you will be fine. If anyone comes through there and needs some help the inshore fleet stays on channel 19 and they will be more than happy to help you through. you can call me also and if I am fishing inshore I'll be happy to get you through.

    good luck,
    Troy

    Capt. Troy,

That is a great offer. I transit that area about 3-4 times a year and if the weather sucks will dip in or out of OI to run the sound. Nothing like getting a little local knowledge about changes in the channel. There was a local sportfish Capt. that helped me out with the marker 55 mess last fall. You guys up there are a great bunch and it is greatly appreciated. I stop by Pirates Cove when time allows during deliveries, they have the friendliest staff. Next time you see Dockmaster Bryce tell him Adam from Florida said hello. Thanks again.

    Will do Adam,
I see him everyday. They finally pulled the markers and it actually makes it easier to understand but there are still some places you need to be aware of.

Speaking of marker 55, had a guy following me in on Sunday in a big Bertram and he swung the marker to wide. A watched him pile it up behind me, he got it off and said everything was Ok but it wasn't pretty. Don't be affraid to ask, it could save you some $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    Capt. Adam,
Troy is one of my dock partners and you can rely on anything he tells you. Like he said most of us are on either 19 inshore or 80 offshore and will be glad to help anytime....... we all take the inside, wrong side of 55! It easy to mess up in these channels. They are constantly changing.
