Does anybody know who built the orca?I would like to build an exact replica of it and make it go fast.I think it would be unique to own that boat.I have a 23' now but I'm going to need a bigger boat.

I believe it was built specifically for the movie. By movie people.
Not by any known builder.
When it sank in the movie, they actually left it there, for some time.
I know a guy that has the machete that Quint stuck in the gunnel.
The Orca was just an old wreck that was on the Vineyard.
For the movie a steel frame was attached to the hull below the water line,
for towing and flotation.
The late John Parkinson was one of the riggers from the Vineyard, an old friend of mine.
John was out of camera range on the boat while filming. He kept the engine going when needed. During shots when smoke was comming out of the exaust
(dry stack) John was in engine room squirting oil in a hole he drilled in the exaust manifold. When the bouys were being towed by the 'fish' it was really just an anchor w/pulley system towed by skiffs.
I think the Orca was provided by Lynn Murphy. After the filming the boat was hauled up on his beach in Menemsha channel and burned. The steel frame was there for years, may still be.
The shark's nick name was Bruce, I saw it on a flat bed truck when it came to the Island.
All kinds of locals were extras, know most of them. Many are dead.
I saw some of the filming stuff that remains.I also met some of the extras this year while on vacation there.Had a great dinner at the Black Dog.Did Edgartown and the whole tourist thing.I guess I will have to draw up some plans and find a builder or build it myself.I'm really hung up on having a boat like that, but I'm sure the impulse will pass in a few weeks.

All kinds of sites have Jaws stuff.
sjogren,
Do you know Stanley, from Menemsha Seafood. I have became friends with him over the years from fishing up there in June for Stripers. He told me that they picked Quint because he looked like Stanley did from his commercial days running his vessel with his beard & hat.
I did'nt know that about Stanley.
There is a book out about the late Craig Kingsbury. He did a bit part and was the face to a 'dead' body in a scene under water. Craig was Robert Shaws mentor for fishing talk and Vineyard isms.
'Now were not fishing for tommy cod or blue gills' I'm paraphrasing this quote
from Quint but they got it from CK.
They movie was fairly low budget, so a lot of stuff was picked up here or improvised.
The harpoon rifle belonged to Steve Bryant ( I'm pretty sure? ) He owned a series of 'Sea Saw' boats 1...2..3.. was in the chain saw busines.
I was working on sword fish harpoon boat at the time, my captain was Dave Thompson on China Moon. Dave and I were at Steve's house and showed the
rifle to us and was willing to let us try it fishing. I do'nt remember what make
of it but it was quality weapon, it was chambered in.30 cal , I do remember that.
It was 32 yrs ago I was 23. Still not real sure where the boat came from
but it was'nt in good shape at the start.
I just remembered about Stanley sword fishing... He was harpooner but stayed up in the mast to help spot. When a fish was spotted he would put a piece of heater hose ouer the fore stay and slide all the way to the pulpit and stick the fish. It was a big western rig he was way up there.. 30-40 ft?
