Thats always been the contention, and many fans do believe that. But there also have been many denials. My guess is to avoid having to pay any compensation to Frank. I can't see how Frank couldn't have been the model to be honest.

Here are a few links with more about that. You be the judge:

This is really a great thread. Some great stories and details I'd not heard before Sjogren! Especially things like who did the rigging and smoke. I'd always thought the engine was just shot and worn out or in need of an oil change.

As for the Tiger shark, that was flown in believe it or not. I'll post a photo later of it being brought to the airport.

A bunch of stuff was added to it here including the spotting tower. The tower made it so top heavy it wanted to roll over. Some of the Island guys that worked on it went all over the Island getting lead including the lumber yards.
Well they rented the lead to the movie by the pound ,by the day!
The boat had no interior and was lightly built so the interior shots were done on a set ,from what I've learned from John Jr.
The other good one he told me was that when filming the shot where Quint slides down the deck into the sharks jaws they used John Jr's skate board.
Every time they tilted the deck quint did'nt slide very good so John Sr. thought of the skate board and used his kid's.
I was also told that many houses were built by people here making the movie money.
Oh ya... He confirmed about Stanley being model for Quint as well.
Fascinating info. Really confirms some things I'd heard from locals and Edith Blake. Especially about the lead being used to keep her from rolling over. Have never heard about Stanley though, so thats really interesting.

I wonder if John Jr. still has that skate board by chance; or photos from back in the day?

Wild. We're you in that scene? Must have been fun times to be sure.

How it might look as a full scale boat back home in Menemsha harbor. Thats actually one of our miniatures composited into a current day shot with a friend of ours sitting on the transom.

My friend and I have been researching this old boat for some time now. After my comission fell through I made several attempts to build the boat on my own,but cash flow sunk us about 1/4th the way through. We did however manage to meet some interesting folks who provided us lots of great info along the way thus allowing me to produce some pretty accurate miniature scale models (shown below).I am also curious,do you have boatbuilding experience or are you wanting to hire someone to build it?
