depends on how far offshore you are, and whether or not the people around you pay attention to the radio.
we had a douchebag while i was still in school who managed to set off an inmarsat/dsc distress signal at the same time we were outside discharging the expired flares and shit like that.
there were 3 ships around us and all heard the radio call regarding the flares, but when the jackass (thought he was pretty smart) set off the distress signal, we had calls from all around the world comin in askin if we were really sinking
We live out in BFE and we burn our trash. I use my old one to start my fires in my trash pit.
I had a bunch I used to kill wasp nests in the ground they worked great.![]()
I'm surprised at all the talk about throwing out old flares and no one has mentioned keeping them on board as spares. I always have the up to date flares and keep the expired ones as well. I figured if I ever find myself in a tight spot, I won't mind having a full box of old spare flares.
Perhaps many of you guys have plenty of spares already. For those of you that have shot off expired flares, has anyone ever had trouble getting them lit, etc?

As long as they stayed dry I neverhad a problem with them not going off... I do keep expire flares on board but some I take off and use as fire starters.
have had a few expired pyrotechnics fail to ignite in the past. if they dont lite off, droppem rite over the side.
Hand helds-Use them to torment the damn gophers in yard. Light them, stick down in hole with wet rag around it to seal and circulate caustic smoke. Even better if you can get about three going at same time. Enjoy!
Your nearest haz-mat disposal site should take them.
