Sounds more like a group of hungry ones with teeth. Does it really matter the man is dead. Prayers go out to his family.

Have spent a lot of time freediving pretty much those same waters. Almost every time in the water you will see sharks. They rarely ever bother you but every now and then one or two get curious. Most of the bites occur with either people wading in the surf to fish or someone who has caught a shark and brings it up on the beach but doesn't know how to handle the fish. You're right, doesn't sound like whites but they do swim the water out there. And considering the water temps are low right now, sure, could be whites. Either way, it really sucks. Spent four nights straight last season just sharking at night from the beach in Sebastian. 80 or so sharks hooked in those four nights, that ought to give you some indication as to how many are swimming the Florida shorelines.
Over in the other thread I threw in my two cents. Blacktips and spinners really don't have the hardware to get deep enough on a bite to get to major blood supply which evidently is what killed this poor fellow. T heads have attitude but again relatively small mouth. Tiger is unlikely as if it decides to eat some one it will usually do the whole job.
White though they pass by once in agreat while I wouldn't even throw into the fray...
I'd bet cash money it was a bull or bulls. No fish strikes more fear in me than them. They look big and dumb but when they get fired up they are some kind of mean. I have watched them run down free swimming barracudas and even wahoo so they have a motor and propellor system that is indeed impressive.
Then we get to the teeth and jaws. Very similar to that of a white. The triangular shape and serrated edge is often mistaken as that of a white. They get in that head shaking mode and they can easily go through a leg or abdomen.
If you've seen that dopey Dr. get bit over at Walkers Cay on the discovery channel you can see that it was nothing for that bull to tear his calf muscle right off which if not treated could cause a bleed out. My guess is bulls. As they do travel in packs frequently.
