One of the MOST DISTURBING things I have read in a long time (directly from the comments section on FoxNews about this subject)...

"it’s just pot and it’s not like he was doing it while competing! And I agree with Robert, if two presidents can do drugs, one heavy, and run our country why crucify Phelps?"

WTF HAS HAPPENED TO PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY????

Sorry, I still think it's too much hype over something dumb that Michael Phelps did....

I'm also sorry that it seems to diminish his other outstanding accomplishments. Everyone just waiting, panting, frothing at the mouth so that they can point the finger at a young man with extraordinary achievements and say "what a dumbass..."

I'm simply not that judgemental - or maybe I've just been living in the islands too long...

I guess I believe those that are gifted with not only a remarkable talent, but the gifts and fortunes that come with it... AND the impact they have on the younger, aspiring kids... should be held to higher expectations than the run of the mill college kid (the 80 % er's).

Just my opinion. But what the heck... once society gets to the point of not giving a shit, I guess it doesn't matter...

Where have those that really can make a difference gone???

Maybe some 8 year old kid will ask him if he prefers water bongs or just twisting one up... afterall, how many college kids are there sitting around with the expertise to comment have multi million dollar contracts and cameras in front of them listing to every word... not to mention 14 gold medals? (If the answer is zero... then maybe he should be responsible enough to understand that the "I made a mistake as I am only 20 something" doesn't fly... well, maybe the first time, but not the second).

i dont know the guy but i can almost guarantee that he wasnt smoking pot in the years and months leading up to the 08 Olympics. those guys are tested all the time, plus im sure he was 100% focused on training for the 08 games. you wouldnt believe the amount of discipline it take to participate in any sport at the Olympic level.

when it comes to being a role model. the youngsters that are at the level he was at age 12 or 13 have the brains to make their own decisions about a photo of the person at the top of their sport.

also at age 12 or 13 the kids that are competing at the Olympic level know what they have, trust me i was there. me and everyone i played with took our sport very seriously and never did anything to jeopardize our chances of becoming a professional. yes there were kids that fell off or chose the partying life style over what playing our sport at a high level. but thats life and that was one less person to compete against.

all in all i dont think Phelps will be competing in the next Olympic games, not because of the partying or pot smoking. probably because you cant have a life training at level for anything, he already accomplished what no one in history could, why not stop while your on top.

as far as the pot smoking to each his own. as far as the drunk driving, i had a friend get the same sentence in the same town as phelps. i do not agree with drinking and driving at all

Look, I never said that he didn't make a mistake.

The shame here is how judgemental you all are about it and how you've trashed what I consider to be one of the most phenomenal athletes of our time because of a few dumb mistakes.

Michael Phelps is not the only role model out there. For God sake - who does the 12 year old aspiring to be a politician look up to? Where are the role models here? What about the aspiring musician? Where are the squeaky-clean role models?!?

Did it ever occur to you that the aspiring 12 year old might look at the mistake and see it as a mistake and learn something? Anthony is right - you completely underestimate the ability of a 12 or 13 year old to think for themselves.

My father always told me while I was growing up that you only make a mistake when you make it twice. If you didn't learn from the first mistake and you make it again - THAT's where you've made the mistake.

But whatever - the point is everyone makes mistakes. You, me, Michael Phelps, George W and Obama... to name a few. We're all human beings. Hell, if I got trashed like this every time I made a mistake, I'd be huddle in the corner in a fetal position.

And Galazio - I HIGHLY doubt that an 8 year old is going to have his "first" expsoure to the concept of pot because of Michael Phelps. Hellooooo...!! Are you completey unaware of what's going on out there??? I'm not saying I condone it - I'm saying that your kidding yourself. You can't shield them every minute of the day and certainly not forever. Rather, why not allow this situation to be a chance to discuss something like this with your kids? Use it as a tool to teach your kid that maybe that wasn't such a good idea. Ultimately, our children are OUR responsibility. Not Michael Phelps's.

Hot Dang! Just when I was looking for a new role model in my life ( Mike Tyson, George Bush, Bayrack Obama, and Jerry Falwell just were not working out)....

Along comes Michael Phelps! Best damned swimmer in history, and a real live normal human being too!!

Now...where do I find one of them 'bonger' things in this little country? We don't have that kinda shop here.
