Now I can't get the spindle out!

For those of you who didn't see my thread about getting a nut off my trailer spindle...

    Trailer Spindle Question

So now I have the nut off the back side of the spindle but now I can't get the damn spindle out!

Am I missing something? I beat on it with a hammer and even got under the boat with my maul and beat the hell out of it. The damn thing won't pop out.

Is there a secret to getting that thing out?

    Thanks,
    Tim

    Tim,

Don't know much about trailer's per say. But I be willing to bet it's seateds on a tapered shaft, if not a keyed tapered shaft. I'd also be willing to bet that no never seize was used., that would more than likely make it kinda rusted in place. Heat would be my guess a cutting torch with a rosebud tip will probably be your best friend right now. Get the whole thing nice ang hot, then give a few very nice lick's. Any chance one of your motor pool buddie's having a small cutting set around? Just got in, got the Bertram rigged to the teeth now, look's real good. Frank

    One More Thing,

Please tell me that you're wearing safety glasses while you're whacking that spindle (seriously). That's hardened steel, when it splinter's it comes apart in shard's, will dig into your skin or eye's just like frag will. No joke, I learned that the hard way a long time ago. Once it get's below the skin level it's very painfull getting it out, barb's. Frank

Oh, I'm wearing eye pro about 100% of the time. Even tape it to my face when I sleep! If I can find some time tomorrow I'll try heating it up a bunch. If the butane doesn't work I'll try to find a real torch. Why can't this shit ever be easy!

For about 50 bucks you could probably pick up a small bottle of mapp gas and a turbo torch head......it's certainly no match for oxy/ acetelene but burns alot hotter than propane.

No need to waste time with the butane if I can get MAPP at lowes. I'll head up there and get some tomorrow.

    Thanks,

    Tim,
Before you go to a whole lot of effort and do a bunch more beating on the spindle, clean up the back of the spindle, and make sure that it isn't welded on - A lot of them are...

Haha! I found out about the welding when I was doing a bit of research online. I checked, it's not welded.

Appreciate you bringing it up though.

I know the Lowes in Raleigh carry MAPP Gas. It is in the Tool Section near the Welding supplies. Bernzomatic has a MAPP Gas kit.

I'd say soak that think in PB Blaster or similar overnight, heat it and beat it...
