Nikon D50 help needed

I have a nikon d40 and a d50 and both have worked fine for quite a while. we download the pictures to either of our computers without issue. this morning I tried downloading some shots and the home computer says device not recognized (never had that problem before) so I went out to the office and tried it on the office computer and it also said device not recongized. So I put my chip into the other camera and tried it and it said device not recognized. how could that be. any answers or remedies would be appreciated.

As I read this aloud my wife who is a photog yelled "bad cord". Then I scrolled down abit. We have a D40x and a D80.
