Here on the Texas Gulf Coast, folks often substitute seafood for turkey. We'll have turkey this year. But mostly, we have a seafood extravaganza.
We include lobster, crab, shrimp, fish, mussels, abalone, crawfish (not really seafood but we include it anyway). Given the huge variety of ways these can be cooked, our Thanksgivings are never mundane, but rather, highly anticipated by all attendees.
You should see the faces of the guests when they're confronted with a seafood Thanksgiving. Most are thrilled.
But we also have a smoked turkey too for those who insist on being traditional.
