Like to know what type and if possible recommendations on brand.
    Thanks in advance.

If you have a bright room your gonna want a LCD at least but make sure it is LED backlit as apposed to flourescent backlit (check the specs first). If it was me I would go for the Samsung LED if you don't mind paying the extra cash. Plasmas draw more power than an LCD or LED so it will overtime add a little to your electric bill in most cases.

Back in the day Plasma's were the way to go for movie watching and LCD was the way for PC images. This was due to the low refresh rate of and LCD versus a Plasma. Now a days you could get a LCD with just as good of refresh rate as a Plasma but whatever you do make sure you get 1080P, and at least 120Hertz as apposed to 720p/1080i at 60Hertz.

Surprisingly I have been steering people to the Vizio lineup, they have done well in head to head competition with other models and are less expensive and with that said it's the #1 selling display and they are there own company. The Sony Bravia's are nice as well.

    Next is Blueray :-)

I'm redesigning the entertainment system on the Maggie B and have done quite a bit of research on flat screen TV's, Blu-Ray, A/V receivers, etc.......

    Here's what I went with.....

Sony Bravia XBR9...in my case it was a 32"...

If I were going with a Sony 42" LCD, I would seriously look at the XBR10 series....the new XBR10 has the new Gen 3 Bravia engine....

    Pioneer SC-25 A/V Receiver

    Pioneer BDP-23FD Blu-Ray

    I'll also second the avsforum.com website......it's a great resource!

    Good luck!

To dispel couple of rumors. I have been in custom av and selling sets since 98. Quality brands do make a difference. Current generation panasonic plasmas are rated at 100,000 hrs, sony or samsung lcds are 60,000 hrs. Led lcds are on their way out. I am at Ces now and looking at all these 3d tvs. Sorry, I'm not going to put glasses on to watch tv. Lcds will never be able to compete with plasmas picture quality. Plasmas have 600hz refresh rate, top lcd has 240hz. Black level is the most important aspect of tvs though. Panasonic bought the rights to Pioneer plasma technology and parts, and currently make the best set now. Pioneer has been king for years, mainly because of their black levels. Bottom line, if you want the best picture quality, and longevity, go with a Panasonic plasma, v series if you can.

i am in the business... Lcd's are brighter and mostly for graphics and still images, becuase of their brightness ratio. Anything under a37" is usually a lcd too. I sell all commercial flat screens, LCD's and Plasmas. The commericial grade plasma units have 3 year on site warranties, and the brightness ratio is better so if you can access one of those, than that is what you would want and for long periods of use or time. I would recommend replace with a sharp 42 inch. Plasmas are the best for live streams, and because they don't the the increased brightness ratio, then the live feed looks real, the LCD"S sometimes brighten it up to much, and then if you are looking to go HD, it you want true HD, 1080P which most are not broadcasting in, then we have a whole new concern...let me know if i can help...

Holy information overload Batman. Just when I thought I had it pretty well figured out. Here comes CES. I'm about 45 days away from pulling the trigger so please keep opinions coming.
    I need more confusion (LOL)
