    New to Sportfishermen.com

How's it going everyone. New to the website and just wanted to throw out a couple of questions and see what i get tossed back my way. Im 25 and live in Matawan, NJ right now and I'm looking to make a serious change in my life. Fishing has always been a passion of mine but never had the opportunity to make it more than just a passion and Im looking for some advise on how i can make the jump from purely being a passion to possibliy an occupation. Besides the basic New Jersey boating safety course and operating our familys 21' walk around, I have no experience what so ever. Im as green as it gets and I dont even know where to start to look for a deckhand job or anything that I would be able to do to get my foot in the door and gain some experience. Even to just start out I would work for no pay just for the experience alone, if i was able to just tag along on the weekends or evenings. My ultimate goal would to be setting up my own charter down in the Jaco/Los Suenos region of Costa Rica someday. I dont care if it takes me 10 or even 20 years to do so. One thing i realized while down in Costa Rica is life is to short to be sitting in the cube all day pounding away on the keyboard like a trained chimp. I'd rather take a chance on doing something new and fall flat on my face then to look back in a couple of years and regret never taking a shot at it while I had the chance. Here is step one. Any advice or words of wisdom are greatly appreciated.

cburg- while I can't answer your question, I will tell you that with an attitude like that I would think that you would be able to find some place that will give you an opportunity to gain experience. There are countless guys on the site here who make their living every day, and I think they'll tell you that you probably will never work harder, you probably won't make a ton of money, but then again you probably will never find another living that can be so enjoyable. Good luck with your search!

    Welcome!

You will learn tons of info just on this website alone.

I see you live in Matawan. Check out the Capt. John party boat in Keyport. That would be a good place to start. Also go down and talk to the guys on the Lucky Carm in Browns point marina on west front street in Keyport. From what I understand he is always looking for a mate.

I should be running offshore as soon as my boat is fixed (I hope by the weekend) and if I have room you would be welcome to come along. I am by no means an expert, but it's not my first time at the rodeo.

I hope to get out the middle of next week if the weather permits.

    Good luck and welcome aboard.

    Thumbs up Welcome

Hey man you will learn a ton of stuff from this website just like I have and I know you don't want to be stuck in your cubical on a day typin away but who says you have too? Check it early in the morning and at night! Go to your local marina and start asking around there where to go and what to do! Welcome to the site and prepare yourself to learn a lot!

Thanks all for the welcome's and words of advice, Im going to get started this weekend and head down the marina and just start asking questions. The more questions I ask the more I'll learn right, what do I have to lose. Just hope people will be receptive.

Costa Rica is heaven on Earth, if you haven't gotten the chance to experience it yet your missing out and I suggest getting down there a soon as possible.

Giantfan once your boat is up and running and if you so happen to have room for one more I would be glad to throw in for gas and anything else you would need just to get out on the water with someone that can teach me a thing or two. Not sure if your name has anything to do with the New York Giants but if it does, GO GIANTS!!!
