NEW POSTER -INTRO - fishin' history
Hi guys!
I thought I'd chime in with a new post. I've enjoyed surfin' the posts here...great info!
QUICK INFO:
Grew up on a lake here in Michigan fishing for bluegills, sunfish, bass, northern pike, walleye. Took the occassional trip to the river for some bullhead, carp, suckers. Moved on up about 8 years ago to Salmon fishing in the Muskegon River. I love getting a nice 15-20lb. salmon on and watching them come out of the water and fight like nothing else around here!
Then I decided to try the ocean.
My dad had taken me pier fishing off Bradenton, FL when I was a kid and we caught some of the usual fair there, mostly pinfish that were tough trying to keep away from the pelicans. ;-)
I went on my first party / head boat in Hilton Head shortly after that...caught my first red drum and assortment of other little stuff. I also tried surf casting with my salmon rod only to find the surf was a little rough on my flimsy 10' salmon rod & 7' med/light ugly stick...I did manage to catch a croaker though. ;-)
From there I had my first charter in Marathon aboard the WIZ'RD OF OZ at Banana Bay Resort. That was my best and only real charter so far...but I can't get that out of my head...and it's been 5 years. I caught a king or two...and a monster barracuda on the Atlantic side. We parked over a reef and caught all kinds of yellowtail, a hogfish, whatever else would bite and had a 'cuda on the light line for about 15 minutes. I really enjoyed that spot...you never kew what you'd pull up.
I tried surf casting at Hunting Island State Park in SC two years ago, but the surf was so rough because of TS Alberto, it was a lost cause.
Anyway, I seem to do a trip or two to the Atlantic coast every year and would like to do some more surf fishing. I'd love to do some charters, but the family budget & schedule usually doesn't leave all that much room for it. I may try another party boat, but wasn't all that impressed the first time 'round...more driving that fishing.
Well that's about it. I'll probably start a post looking for some info on an inexpensive surf casting setup and perhaps some tips for upcoming trip to Hilton Head & the NC coast.
See ya!
