    Need Fish ID

Well I took my little boy out behind the house to fish the other morning.

It is brackish water at best and we were fishing for croaker, but he caught this strange looking fish.

I have caught many types of fish but never seen 1 like this. Looks kinda like a carp.

It put up a decent fight for a few seconds and then came in belly up.

    Any ideas?

looks like it is a carp, but I have only seen the big ones fining and tail up. Never caught one. Did pass a few belly up over the years running the Chesapeake. They had a larger scale due to the size I guess.

Yeah I have been doing some research. I beleive it is a SUCKER but not freshwater. We caught it in brackish water.

I made some calls and found out a little about their lives and habitat.

    1. For sure a bottom feeder.
    2. Act real big on rod and reel but normally do not put up much of a fight, belly up most times.
    3. All bones no muscle.
    4. Will feed on anything including feceses in rivers.
    5. Does not eat swimming baits, mostly likes trash bait right on the bottom.

Thats what the elders tell me but still looking for 100% ID.

    Thanks in advance.

    Nice call Striper.

Got any idea how this fish ended up in brackish water?

    Habitat or feeding preference?

Maybe just a strange bite in a strange world.

I guess you never know what will happen when you throw out the bait.

The only thing I can think of is it got lost! I caught plenty of them in the Deleware River above the brackish water. So I can see how they could make their way down to the Brackish.
