We had porpoise in the lights last week eating, what we thought were lancet fish. Now, I'm not so sure after looking at some pics online. We scooped some up with a net, got bit (toothy little b*stards!) and rigged a free drifting line with a small hook and boxed a nice YFT Water was 65-69 in 600-1000' of water.
What do you think? They were about 5-6" inches long, skinny with a dorsal that ran the length of its back; a bit like a mini-cuda.
Snake mackerel are perciform fishes in the family Gempylidae.
They are elongate fishes with a similar appearance to barracudas, having a long dorsal fin, usually with one or finlets trailing it. The largest species, including the snoek, Thyrsites atun, grow up to two metres long.
They are deep-water benthopelagic fishes, and several species are important commercial and game fishes.
That's it!! Thanks. The porpoise were snatching those up for an hour or two early AM last Thurs AM. So, we scooped one of these up, stuck it on a hook and picked up a yft.
I was gonna say snoek (pronounced snook) but thats a cold water fish we ctach in South Africa. I wasn't aware there were subspecies in the north atlantic (as opposed to south) ... Never too old to learn. Thanks for sharing...
