Having traveled several times overseas ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. I don't want to get you paranoided, but not everybody likes Americans, and it don't matter where you go. With that being said, learn a few local phases, like good morning, afternoon and evening, hello, goodbye and thank you. Even if you goof it up but make an honest attempt the locals will appreciate it. Keep your head on a swivle and your hand on your wallet. It sounds like a lot to worry about but its really not. When your overseas, remember YOU are the foreinger not them. As far as Italian foods I prefer the red sauce not the creame and try the home grown vino when eating its usually pretty good. Relax, enjoy yourself but do keep a watchfull eye out. When in Rome hit the Colossium and tour the Vatican. The artwork in there is amazing.
Thanks for going! Best advice I have is to ask the locals, getting to know the folks in the "friendly" areas on such "business trips" is key. Be safe, come home safe. Hope you enjoy.
The one thing I remember from Sardinia was the knife shops around the port. They are known for many things, food but also their crafting of wonderful pocket knives. I've had mine for 15 years and it still has a great edge. The food is not what you might expect, especially in Rome. Dont expect a red suace joint like we have back home. Try the grilled fish anywhere you can.
Go see the Collesium, and amazing place to see at least once. Forget the shopping, you might se some great deals on suits and leather, but for the most part, the quality sucks. Also check out the Spanish steps in Rome. Walk the streets around there. Pickpockets are everywhere, and con scams happen. The tour of the Vatican was too long, but the Sistine Chapel will change your life. Across the street from the main tourist entrance is a smal pizza joint that makes the best pizza, worth the trip. Order a Peroni (Italian Beer) and enjoy your trip.
The whole Meditarian is very overfished. As said before "fish when you get home".
I've been to Florence and Venice but never Rome. Some awesome things to see. Overall, Italy is not the cleanest country compared to places like Austria, Germany or Switzerland but the architecture and food can't be beat!
