My rant about OVERRATED tackle and gear...

Ive had enough. I just need to get it all out…

Whats the deal with:

1. Butterfly Jigs? Everyone raves about this crap but does it improve your catchin ability? Probably not. There are plenty of other lures/baits that can be used that are not only cheaper but are probably more effective. Seems that once some fishermen open their mouths about this stuff, EVERYONE must now go out an buy it. Not only that, they have to get “butterfly jigging” rods as well. Ive used them and theres nothing special about them. People just need to realize that just because that jig looks so nice to you, doesn’t mean it catches fish. I don’t care what stupid color butterfly jig your using, a regular $2 diamond jig will probably outfish it any day. Ive thrown all my butterflies out and continue to use diamonds and Vikings. Much better and less expensive. Its not the jig, it’s the fisherman and the action!

2. Fluorocarbon? I hope there are some of you that have finally opened your eyes to the bullcrap that you’ve been fed by these marketing ads. Unless your in skinny or crystal-clear water, it makes no difference. The refractive index of water is 1.33. Fluorocarbon has a refractive index of 1.42 and mono about 1.55.Obviously, the closer the index to water, the less visible the line will be. Is that .13 really significant? Clearly the manufacturers of fluorocarbon want you to believe it is, but it really isnt. Yes it may be very abrasion resistant, but its more expensive and once it gets [in the slightest way] chaffed or nicked; it becomes more visible than regular mono. Presentation is everything, but the leader is only one apart of the equation.

3. Pelagic Gear? I don’t get it. What do people love about this stuff? Does it help you catch fish? No. Does it make you look cool? I hope you don’t think so. Whats so special about it all? I dont see whats so "high performance" about it all. Whats the big deal about being on the “Pelagic Pro Team” too? So you probably get free t-shirts, visors, and stickers. WOW! Does the mere felling of being on a “pro team” get you excited? I would much rather sport my Sportfisherman.com shirt

4. Accurate Reels? They are definitely the most over-rated and over-priced pieces of junk. Ive seen several 50’s break gears on fish, and have had a few boss mags sieze up for no reason. Not only that, Accurate has a long history of very poor customer service. Several retailers have completely stopped carrying their reels for this exact reason. Is it that “twin drag” stuff that lures you? Just save your money and buy something that proven and tested. Stick with Shimano, Penn, or Avet.

I completely agree with you on those butterfly jigs. Ive bought 5 or 6 of them and the only thing I've caught on the damn things is the bottom.

I pretty much agree with every one of your points. As for Accurates even if I could afford them I don't fish enough to justify it.

Pelagic- OVERRATED... heres my shirt... all faded.... and i had a couple others that completely faded out and were thrown out.... whats the point. they dont even make tackle


Dont even get my started on accurate.. AWFUL.... I saved money for 4 months to buy one and they suck... heres mine... which the drag is all messed up... if i change the setting its on... then i cannot move the lever..and free spool is all messed up as well. this reel has been retired to strickly fishing with the sabiki rig. cause i cant trust it to handle any fish other than a herring or mackerl.

Now Butterfly Jigs are terrible.. i couldnt even catch dog fish on them... and the NE guys know how thick they are up here when chumming.. I watched BOX's movie and had the jigging method down pat.


NOW as for the TREVALA jig rods they are awsome... i have 2 of my prized AVETS sitting on them. As well as another AVET and Trevala on its way in the mail

Exactly. The only reason you go lighter is because thinner line is less visible (less surface area). If it were truelly "invisible", you wouldnt need to do this...
