Marty on the muther board you have a battery or dallas clock. It is charged 24/7 when you use the computer every day. Let it sit for a week and the c-mos will take a crap on an older battery. You can replace the battery. They are sold at the computer store and come with a wire connected and a jumper on one end. Plug the jumper in next to the old battery or dallas clock on the muther board. Velcro it in place. You will have to reset the settings in the bios. The reason the boot is stalled... is the bios has lost the hard drive settings .

There is a work around but you need a history lesson in DOS and the Windows and a bootable floppy

advice is take it to the hospital for computers for a new battery and bios setup. I wish you lived closer

Very good idea Flat, makes sense too.

I went into his bios yesterday and it had his DVD rom as the first boot device. I made his hard drive the first boot device as it should be but that did not fix the problem.

It is either a bad hard drive or what you said IMO.

John the first sign it is a battery is this. Boot the computer off of a bootable floppy. Change the directory to c:/windows and look for windows.exe or win.exe. The title depends on the operating system version. Any who type the .exe and windows will appear. The bios is a translator of hardware settings that windows reads to create a positive boot. When the bios is with out a current [battery] it goes to default mode. Provide the current and the bios will retain the settings you save. most bios will have sectors, heads and make built in. If not the case for you. Read on the top of the hard drive and all the info is there to enter in the bios hard drive setup screen. Good luck ! flat

the original battery looks like a quarter "large watch battery" The new replacement has a squared retaining case with a velcro strap to attach it. That should fix you up. Take the motherboard model number and bios version to comp store. They might need that info to cross reference.
