    Morning Prayer??

so, in light of the well aimed and deserved rant by BOX about vhf etiquette (or lack of) and the resulting comments on morning prayers and blessing of the fleet - I want to pose a question

I always enjoyed heading out the inlet with "the crowd" and listening to the morning blessing of the fleet. First time I ever heard it was long ago out of Oregon Inlet. Have since heard it there and around Hatteras some as well. Never actually heard it out of Morehead but understand there was a couple of folks who did it many years ago.

Sooooo, any ideas why it stopped in the morehead area?? Is there just no one left interested in doing it?? I have kinda wondered about this for a while but never got around to asking it. Sure would be nice to have someone doing that, just seems to be kind of a neat thing and regardless of your religious beliefs - it could never hurt!

    thoughts, suggestions.........?

    Hey Troy ,
I all ways feel like I.m heading to the main mans headquarters when I,m heading out to sea . there is not a better place in the planet to talk to him know matter what name you call him. This is what i think that that the whole planet has been fighting over all along ,HIS NAME !It shore is great to be our country where you can call him what ever you want with out getting shot over it . Best thing about being out there is that some times he talks back by putting a fish on the other end of our lines

I am believe Omie Tillet used to say the prayer in the mornings out of Hatteras. I always thought it was cool to listen to. Don't know if he is still fishing or not? I am sure someone around hear can confirm or correct me. Anyone know for sure?

I talked to Omie for a while at the Barta last year and he told me he hasn't fished for a number of years. He was also at the Big Rock awards ceremony. His stories and prayers are great to listen to especially with his accent.

Wouldn't it be cool if someone had recorded them all those years.

Omie Tillet is and has always been out of Oregon Inlet.. Where the Prayer originated.
Out of Hatteras is David Wilson and the Fosters before him. Speaking of Ernal Foster. Who was the man that started the Albatross Fleet with the bamboo outriggers. Hats off to these men who I treasure to the Outer Banks Frontier.

Box told you guys about the problems with the VHF... You may never hear this prayer again, but its still there!

I have in my possession a tape of Omie giving the prayer and I would love for everyone to hear... But I don't know how to post it up.

Capt Omie is fantastic to listen to. And yes, he was out of Oregon Inlet and the one I heard first forever ago. He actually said the prayer at the first Barta event captain meeting, and wow - what a prayer, musta gone on for 10 minutes or more. More like a story than a "prayer", but was really nice considering who it was coming from. I can hear David sometimes when I fish out of ocracoke.

Ron, hope you can figure out how to post up that tape - it would be cool to hear Omie, and for many on here who have never heard him to be able to hear a bit of history. Sadly, I agree with what Marty said, and also with you that this part of NC fishing history has fallen to the wayside. I am no religious fanatic, and am cerainly not without my many faults and demons, but I really hate to see this go away as there was always something comforting about hearing this in the morning. I guess everybody is too worried about being "cool" or as has been said afraid of being heckled - and again, sadly, I honestly believe you would have that happen with some of the morons out there today.

    Skipper,
Across the sound it's all Hatteras to me. OI is what I meant. Most of my fishing down there has been out of OI.
Send Jer a PM. He can tell you how to upload the audio. The board would all enjoy and benefit from it.

This was at the Barta back when it was in Walkers Cay. Damn I look like a dork in that picture I can't remember what year but Tred brought him in to do the prayer. I remember him rambling on for a long time and we were all glued to the speaker and didn't want him to stop. Omie ate dinner with us every night because he felt comfortable around us redneck NC boys.
It was very cool to see the respect he had from fishermen all over the world.
Fishskipper - I would love to hear what you've got. I'm sure Admin can figure it out.
I bet Tred has some recordings too.

Some of Omie's prayers were taped and played on Pat Roberston's 700 club and radio show.
