    Modern day aquaculture, simply amazing

    When I was a kid I, dreamed of the impossible. Tuna, sharks, whales...pelagic giants in an aquarium. Seems like these days they made that dream come true.

    Monterey Bay Outer Bay exhibit. Tuna, Oceanic Sunfish, etc.

    Kuroshio Sea Japan. Whale Shark

    Yea - The Monterey Bay Aquarium is pretty cool. There is also a company in Australia that has been successful in hatching and raising BFTs.

    we used to supply the young tuna and other stuff on the Shogun. Two trips a year to collect fish.

    I was watching something on Discovery a couple of weeks ago and they did just start to hatch them. It's pretty cool how they get them to hatch. It's all with the correct water temp and hours of light they are exposed to. They are trying to duplicate the conditions in the Med I believe. If they could farm these things I'm guessing that we would have one hell of a fishery.

    Ted & Fred are correct, they have just recently been able to replicate the exact conditions (temp/tide/current/light/gravitational pull and a million other nuances) for spawning and produced a batch of bft's.

    It's pretty amazing what they do these days. I think the next great accomplishment is housing a great white. They've done it with limited success

    Well technically you could categorize it one in the same. "Farming" of fish is the re-production of them in a captive environment.

    Captive = Aquarium.

    In the aquarium hobby its called aquaculture.

    I'd love to see a striped marlin or a sailie before a great white. Wouldn't bring as much $$$$ as a great white, but would be awesome for us fishos to see.

    Check the tunas standing out... always moving..

    would be even better if there was at least a fake shipwreck on there... and some triggers and a few potatos just to dominate the place..
