Lightbulb Mitch Roffer Presentation at The Cape May Marlin and Tuna Club

This should be informative and a great time. We'll warm up with a social hour then get into it. Open to the public, no reservations required.

    An overview...

This will be a talk on the scientific method of improving one’s fish per gallon ratio, i.e. improving one’s efficiency in locating concentrations of feeding fish and catching them. It will not be a ROFFS™ infomercial. I will briefly inform the audience of my background as a student at CW Post, Long Island University and University of Miami’s, Rosenstiel School for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (Ph.D.). I will discuss my philosophy on environmental protection, fish conservation, and the importance of preserving habitat and clean water.

I will review some of the satellite fisheries oceanographic research and operational work that I have been involved with at ROFFS™, NASA and NOAA, Office of Homeland Security (including search and rescue), and various state and federal environmental protection agencies (hazardous materials monitoring). I will mention that I have been selected for the past several years to be on the prestigious, international NASA Earth Science’s Ecological Modeling and Forecasting Science Team and on the NASA Ocean Color Science Team and why NASA is interested in fish migrations and fisheries management.

The seminar will focus on what is a preferred habitat and catchability, in terms of water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, clarity/turbidity, and water color. I will discuss fish catchability in terms of fish being available (geographically) and vulnerable to surface fishing gear. El Nino and climate variability will be discussed in relation to catchability. Part of this talk will focus on the absence of yellowfin tuna in July, August and September of 2008 and the long term forecast for 2009.

The subjects of preferred habitat and catchability will be linked to different strategies and tactics that anglers should use to increase their catch rates in relation to the main factors affecting fish in the northeast (temperature, water color, water density, and bottom structure). I will provide a critical review of some of the more common techniques that are presently being used to search for productive fishing grounds by local area fishermen, as well as, by others using satellites, other oceanographic data and models.

We will consider ocean convergence zones in forming concentrations of baitfish and finding concentrations of feeding fish. The importance of ocean circulation and water mass boundaries, in terms of their water density differences, for forming fish concentrations will be stressed. Differences in the direction of rotation of eddy features and fish catchability will be part of the seminar.
I will instruct the audience on how they can find on the internet and use satellite data to understand regional and local area circulation to improve their catch rates. I will highlight the techniques needed to accomplish this, as well as, the challenges and limitations when using satellite data and common errors when trying to interpret the imagery. I will show many different examples of what can be gained from individual static satellite images and movie loops of the data.
There will be a question and answer period at the end of the 60-75 minute seminar.

We ended up with a great turn out and standing room only for Mitch's presentation. A big thank you to everyone that came, it was nice to have you at the club. And of course, special thanks to Mitch and Roffer's for volunteering to do this informative seminar. Great stuff!
