Mayday Bering Sea tonight on Discovery 9PM
V documentary to tell story of Plainville resident's father
PLAINVILLE -- Carl Jacobsen will be sure he's watching TV tonight - and with good reason.
A show on the Discovery Channel will feature the Plainville resident's late father, Eric P. Jacobsen, who captained a fishing ship, "The Alaska Ranger," that went down 120 miles offshore in the frigid Bering Sea on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008.
The show, titled "Mayday! Bering Sea," is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. "This is the true story in the words of those who survived, and the heroic account of those who did not," a promo for the show says.
The senior Jacobsen was one of five who perished in what is considered the largest cold water rescue in Coast Guard history.
Forty-two crew members - most suffering severe hypothermia - were rescued from the water and life rafts after they abandoned the 185-foot ship off Alaska's Aleutian Islands. "The Coast Guard said officers stayed on the boat to the end to make sure the crew got off," Jacobsen said. "I believe my father was the last one off the boat.
