Job Description: The Department of Marine Resource’s, Bureau of Sea Run Fisheries and Habitat is seeking a Marine Scientist IV for a managerial position headquartered in Hallowell. This position is responsible for directing and coordinating the activities of diadromous fish restoration throughout Maine. Extensive training and experience in fisheries biology and population assessment of marine resources are required.
The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the collection and analyses of data, research, management, and restoration projects focusing on all diadromous species and their related ecology in Maine rivers (e.g. interactions with freshwater and diadromous fishes, water quality, physical habitat quality and quantity, population dynamics, hydrology, connectivity, and climate change). This position will also recommend fisheries management actions (research, stocking, regulations) based on analyses of agency data. This position interacts with a variety of state & federal agencies on integrated data management and population and fisheries assessments. The position reports to the Director of the Bureau of Sea Run Fisheries and Habitat.
This position will directly oversee two Biologist III’s and one Marine Scientist III and shall coordinate and direct research programs to obtain scientific information needed for management decisions. An understanding of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is desirable. The position advises the Bureau Director, Director of External Affairs, Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner on the development of state, interstate, and federal management policies, regulations, and legislation. A key responsibility is to represent the department at interagency, interstate, and federal meetings in order to provide scientific expertise for fisheries management. The position designs and submits research proposals to state and federal agencies in order to obtain funding, conducts research and analyses, and writes and reviews reports.
This is a supervisory position responsible for coaching and evaluating the performance of subordinates. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of fisheries research, assessment, and management practices; knowledge of statistics and sampling design; knowledge of fish passage issues and related state and federal policies; demonstrated experience of teamwork in a large organization; excellent written and oral communication skills; supervisory experience; experience in grant writing; collaborative research experience; and the ability to plan, implement, and evaluate marine research.
Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelors Degree in a scientific, technical, or engineering discipline, or equivalent in directly related work experience and eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of marine resource research and management which includes supervision and coordination of research and support functions. A Masters Degree in Fisheries Science or closely related filed is highly desirable.
