    MANATEE OFF JERSEY COAST

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.- A Coast Guard boatcrew assisted a local non-profit organization in locating a manatee in the waters off the New Jersey coast this afternoon.
The staff of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center contacted the crew of Coast Guard Station Barnegat Light, N.J., at about 2:30 p.m. and requested assistance in locating and photographing a manatee sighted in the Long Beach Island area.

The specific location is being withheld for the sake of the animal's safety. However, if a mariner sights the manatee, they are advised to stay clear and contact the Marine Mammal Stranding Center immediately at (609) 266-0538.

Box - Manatees love fresh water. Jen held a hose to a manatee for 5 minutes one time down in Fl and the damn thing wanted more and more. Cool animals.

Dont' let the save the manatee people ruin your boating like they have in South West Florida. We now have HOURS of No Wake zones because someone has seen a manatee in the area.

At my house in SW Florida, I can call them to my dock by running a water hose for 10 minutes. Here where I live and some other parts of FL, The "Save the Manatees" club has been very successful in getting the Army Corp place a moratorium on building docks on private property. The thinking is no docks= no boats to harm the manatee. Of course there is no scientific data that supports this. The majority of manatee deaths here are caused by Red Tide outbreaks, this IS supported by fact through autopsy.

Couple weeks ago, we had a Manatee hanging out by a stormwater outflow in Greenwich Bay up here in RI, and it made its way back down the bay, as it was sighted in Wickford Harbor (my hometown) and then further south afterward.

That's still within the "range" of Manatees, so not that weird, but definitely not common.
