Question Man Overboard ends with shooting

    How could you explain this??????

    SAN DIEGO UNIFIED PORT DISTRICT
    HARBOR POLICE
    PRESS RELEASE

    ________________________________________________________
    Incident Type: Officer Involved Shooting

    Incident Date/Time: July 19, 2008 at 2309 hrs

    Location: San Diego Central Bay

At approximately 2310, 07/19/08, a charter vessel cruising in San Diego Bay reported a “man overboard”. The call for help was sent to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) via Marine VHF Channel 16 by the Captain of the excursion boat. Two Harbor Police boats and a USCG patrol vessel responded to the call for assistance.

A Harbor Police vessel found the suspect in the water about 500 feet south of the USCG Air Station. The suspect boarded the police boat and began fighting with the two-officer boat crew. One officer was knocked to the deck injured. The suspect took the officer’s taser and struck him violently in the face with it. The suspect then tried to take the officer’s duty firearm. As the suspect struggled to get control of the gun, the second officer shot the suspect one time in the torso stopping the assault.

The police boat went to a nearby dock at the Embarcadero and met paramedics. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured officer was transported to Sharp Hospital and admitted with face and leg injuries.

San Diego Police Department is conducting the shooting investigation with the assistance of the San Diego Harbor Police Department and the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office.

Should have tased the bro with the other officers unit? Otherwise, it's simple self-defense on the officers part, who was obviously in fear for his partners life.

Still think they should train to shoot the extremeties, not torso in close in situations.

If you go for their guns you are very likely to die. There is no such thing as shooting to maim or disable, only in the movies and tv... in real life every shot is a kill shot.

So what would have happened if Joe Smoe tried to pluck this guy out? Too strange.

I'm guessing the guy wanted to kill himself so he jumped out of the boat. When the cops pulled him out he had them do the job for him!

Seen too many Die Hard type movies. They shoot to stop. Best way to do that is dead center mass.

Dead center mass is also the safest way to shoot a subject.

The last thing I want is a cop or anyone to miss their target and hit something they weren't intending to hit.

Glad to hear none of the officers were seriously injured and that the perp is where he belongs.
