Making a mold

arite, Im hot on a special project at the moment and I am in need of guidance....


suppose I have a sample of something I want to make a mold out of...

What do I need to do?

How do I actually make the mold, and can I inject a 2 Part epoxy into it?

Yes - sort of. How big is the item you are trying to make?
Would I be correct in assuming you are making a lure mold?

If so let me know and I can provide you detailed instructions for either a lure mold or something larger...

This mold uses RTV Urethane to make the mold - pretty good stuff, but you do need to use a mold release agent.

Silicone makes a better lure mold, as you don't need the release agent, but is not as rigid and won't last as long

use pvc tube for the shell. it will house the molding material

slice it in half

use moldeling clay to create an end on each part of the sliced tube

lay one half of pvc tube on a "Flat" surface and stablize

now suspend the lure so that half of the body of the lure is even with the pvc tube. You can use welding rod, or wire of some sort. stuff moldeling clay around the opening where the wire goesinto the lure

spray the lure with a release agent

spray the pvc tube with release agent

mix and pure the molding material in the half of the pvc tube and stop at the half way point of the lure

insert four cigerette filters into the mold mix for key points around the edges. spray the filters with release agent before inserting

let dry 24 hours

remove the cigerette filters

spray the other half of the pvc tube with release agent and also the mold and lure half

place the two pvc halves together and use more moldeling clay to seal the ends

one end will need a pure hole

secure the halves with rubberband or black tape

mix molding material and pure

Now you have and exact copy. wahoo scratches and all


let dry

split the pvc halves and remove the mold

split the mold halves and remove the lure

I will go start to finish from a hardwood dowel turned in the lathe to finished urethane lure.

This sounds like a great winter program.....like, every other sunday, 1:00pm to 2:00 pm until finished.......
