    Mackeral

Anyone know if the mackeral still show up at the lumps of OCMD and when? Been a while since I went out for them.
If I remember right should be anytime now.

I don't think mackerel fishing has been too good out of OC for a while. I fished for them about 10 to 12 years ago and caught plenty back then, but it hasn't been very good in recent years. Mid March to Apiril are the times when I had luck. The weather usually does not cooperate that time of year.

Thats what I was afraid of. With the mild weather we've been having, and if we get a good day, I thought Mackeral would be a great first offshore adventure for my grand kids.
If their running its non stop action.

I haven't been mackerel fishing outta OC since I was a kid. I remember it being in April, though. Haven't heard much in recent years.

I usually get couple dozen each year to make daisey chain teasers out of and the commercial guy I know gave up looking for them. Thye said at 3.50 a galon if they sunk the boat with them thay wouldnt make enought ot pay for fuel. They havent been catching them very good anyway. Maybe thats what Mackeral needs is a break and some time to rebuild.

Gotta wonder why they left .
When I first started fishing out of OCMD you could go out to the 1-3 lumps and load up on Mackeral early then blue fish. After a few years you had to go out to the jackspot for Blues. I remember hearing the charters bitchin about havin to go all the way to the Jackspot for Blues. Maybe the Macks moved out deeper also but not worth chasin.
Wonder what put em off the lumps ?
