John, so sorry to hear that dude. I know those were 14 great years and that dog gave you all the love he had. Take good care of that pup.

I like all dogs, but those Labs, they just aren't dogs, they are companions who offer up a kind of love that is unlike any other. They are hunting buddies, resting buddies, walking companions, clowns, bravehearts, baby sitters, a comfort to old people, so many things.

My previous one, Shadow Girl, was a near-legend in Cabo. Not many knew me, only fishermen, but it seemed that everyone in town new Shadow Girl and loved her. She was taken from me by a drunk driver who is lucky that I was busy trying to comfort my dying great girl and trying to keep her from dragging herself home, rather than letting me pick her up. He will need that luck to continue until the day that I am gone. A swine.

I feel so bad for you, John and I know that you are only letting part of the pain out. And I also feel for your dad, who probably had the same kind of relationship this old man had with his Shadow Girl. I hope that the pup works the same magic for him that the male black pup that one great friend, Captain Black Bart Miller sent to me Florida after I said I could never have another dog and my Little Shadow Girl, who could only have been sent to me by the original.

Impossible? No way! We're talking Labs here.

Remember the good things and know that he is healed and well and at a better place, waiting.
