Actually, I'll take you up on that. But let's spell out a couple of ground rules that will keep it civil.

1) We each get a single post on the topic and no more to state our positions. That way the thread won't devolve into a long uninteresting tirade.

2) We both prepare our remarks in advance and post simultaneously at an agreed upon time and date so that we don't merely post warring oppositional posts that no one wants to read.

3) That we remain civil to the nth degree.

4) That neither of us consult any outside materials to formulate our posts; i.e., everything must come directly from our own heads without recourse to references or others.

5) That the posts could, if printed on a 8.5 X 11 piece of paper in 10 point font easily fit on that page so as to discourage screeds and tirades and encourage the concise laying out of thoughts.

6) That the thread be new and independent of all others.

7) That this is the only "debate" of its sort that we have together on this board. I don't want to devote that much time adinfinitum.

The topic I propose is something I think a lot about...the origins of, the philosophical underpinnings of and the ultimate forecast resolution far into the future of the incessant differences between American conservatives and liberals.

You may feel free to characterize only the liberal side and I the conservative side rather than try to characterize both. This, as you're unlikely to honesly criticize conservatives and I'm actually not very informed about liberal positions, even though some of you mistakenly suggest that I am a liberal.
