little susitna river, mat su valley Alaska

i havent posted here in awhile so i thought id add a quick pic of a silver salmon i caught last night. its a 12# buck on the larger size for this particular river.
in Valdez, where ill be for 10 days at the end of this month, the silvers get pretty close to 20#s. thats the most fun fishing of the year!

yeah he's allright. the other night though i found a new hole on the river and i &^it you not i landed 2 Kings, 3 Chum, 2 Pinks and 2 Silvers in about 2 hours! it was a blast. one king i did not land had to be, honestly, the biggest i ever hooked into. he was one of those you hear stories about, a legendary Little Su Hog. he ran and played with me for about 15 minutes. i had my drag completely locked down and was palming the spool trying to slow him down. he never came up he never showed himself. finally he turned and faced me and just spit out my lure like he was messing with me the whole time. it sure was alot of fun. i love Alaska!

I may be wrong but Im pretty sure I fished the Susitna in Talkeetna about 12 or 13 years ago while in Alaska. There wass a place called Clear Creek where the two guides and I were bluff charged by a sow with two cubs in July. I remember it was right after King Salmon season closed. I cant wait to go back..

no sir you are correct, as far as area and naming goes. silvers pinks and chum would be there right now with a few kings im sure but the season is over for keeping or intentionally fishing for them. i have no doubt there are also "quite a few" of those sows around also!

My sister & husband lived in Wasilla for about 8 yrs, they both taught school up there. We went fishing on the little Susitna river as remember and caught/kept 8 silvers and also caught a couple of "Humpys" which we threw back. We fished with a school teacher that guided during the summer. BEAUTIFUL country up there. Thanks for the report!

We caught some chum salmon but what amazed me was standing in the creek and having fish bump into me. Needless to say the bear ended our trip early as the guides and I were draggin the boat back into the river when she came out of the woods line for round two!
