why do planes not take off if the earth is spinning @ 17,000 miles per. I am sure that would be enough lift to raise them in the air. ..they have to over come gravity by some other force, burning of fuel to create thrust or wind created by many things. It would be possible if in a non gravitational atmosphere or very weak one. If the wind is blowing and I am walking the tredmill out side, will a kite fly if I walk the oppisite direction of the wind? The kite over came gravity by the force of wind, not the speed of the treadmill spinning under me

Because the air that the plane is sitting in is also moving at 17,000 mph. That makes the point. the plane moves forward becuase of it's relationship to it medium, air being pushed by a prop not the rotation of it's gear.
Read the google dude's expalnation. I ain't making this stuff up.

The whole discussion about lift and wind and gravity is irrelevant.

I take back my statement, it can take off, even though the wheels are spining the thrust is going to move the plane through the air regaurdless of whats underneath it. the thrust is attached to the plane not the wheels. now as the plane moves through the air the wheels will spin at 240mph but the plane will be going 120mph. if the thrust was to the wheels and not attached to the body of the plane then it would stay still. make sense?

Bingo. We have a few winners.

The thrust from the plane's jets/props will "push" the plane regardless of what the ground below the plane is doing. The thrust will push the plane foward & the treadmill will speed at a equal rate. The only thing this will do is cause the wheels to spin 2x faster. The only thing that could slow the plane down a tiny bit is the extra friction from the faster spinning wheels. In reality, the treadmill could spin 2x, 4x or any speed in the opp. direction if the wheel bearings & tires could handle the speed.
