Boat defect recall notices are released by the US Coast Guard on at least a monthly basis. Recalls are listed in this chart by Manufacturers Identification Code (MIC) and company. When contacting the manufacturer about a recall, you should refer to the recall campaign number listed in the "Number" column.

For more recalls, visit the US Coast Guard web site. Click on the "Recalls & Safety Defects" icon, or call the Coast Guard Boating Product Assurance Division, 202-267-0984.

Note: According to the US Coast Guard, there may have been problems with some recall campaigns not showing up on their recall database during the last year because some campaigns were not published at the time they were initiated.

If your new boat spends more time in the shop than in the water, it's a lemon.
lemon image by Aleksei Volkhonsky from Fotolia.com The best way to avoid having to deal with federal lemon laws is to buy smart. However, even the most diligent buyer can find himself on the bad side of a deal. Not all states have protective lemon laws, although many do, and others are on the books working toward laws. The federal lemon law acts as a blanket in those cases, and that is when you should use the boat lemon law to get satisfaction.

    Federal Law
The federal lemon law that covers boats is known as the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act, according to attorney Ronald Lee Burdge. The law covers all products along with boats that cost more than $25 and are made for consumer use, such as recreational boats.

    Coverage
The federal lemon law covers all parts of the boat, from mechanical parts to the hull. Not all states have lemon laws. However, in some states, the laws on lemon vehicles including cars, RVs, motorcycles and boats, also include used vehicles. If you buy a used boat that has unresolvable repair issues, you should check your local laws about getting a judgment for a lemon. In both new and used cases, the law covers you regardless of written or express warranties. The consensus is that good condition is implied unless otherwise stated. Implied warranties include breakage of parts that should not break or that wear out under normal use, such as if a fiberglass hull cracks without any reason. The dealer or manufacturer may require testimony from experts regarding the problem. Courts may also deem the testimony of experts necessary before granting a judgment on either side.

    Legal Requirements
The lemon law states that any single issue that requires three trips to a service center or a mechanic visit to the boat without resolution requires the manufacturer or dealer step in and make resolution by replacing the boat, refunding the money or negating the contract.
