take a look at www.fishinginsouthflorida.com
you will see wireman pictures on giant 800lb plus bluefin tunas. Depending on type of fishing, but for most wireman, actually pulling, doublewrapping and holding to a 30' plus leader on a bluefin or a large blue or black marlin, double cotton gloves are good, you can beef them up just a bit with a couple wraps of duct tape over the palm area ( before you put the gloves on, NOT After! you want them to come off without taking your hand with them.) You can also use rodeo gloves, soft leather with fuzzy liner. The worst gloves are probably the welding gloves you see covering half a guys arm, if you need protection at your elbow, you should not be touching the wire. The other gloves you see are sometimes covered by those orange rubbery gloves, no good, heavy mono and a good pull burns right thru the orange stuff. Nowadays, with the windons and lighter tackle people use, the actual job of a wireman is justto pinch and guide the leader and fish to the boat. when you feel like your arms are going to pull off, tthan, you are wiring a fish!
Nine times out of ten on my light or medium to medium heavy stuff its good ol orange "snot" gloves. Wire I move to kevlar and leather junk yard dog brand gloves. Then for the heavy stuff I have welder gloves. I also have a set of finglerless snots to add grip in the palm area...
A lotta years back I had problems busting bones from getting the "squish" from giants so my doctor made me som plastic "cast" inserts. Mine are custom fit but they can be bought at better pharmacies... Havn't busted a bone since.... Very rare I feel the need to use the inserts but #19 wiire giants really call for them...
I have had a set of leather diving gloves for years. They just keep on going. If they messy, I through them in the wash with my fish clothes and they come out like new.
I got them at the local dive shop.
Wire Max have been on board for the past three seasons and I like em. There's a bunch of different one that get it done but as posted previously with windon's and we really have gone to wind on's it becomes much les critical...good luck
FOR THE BILLS..... IF I AM GOING TO GRAB THE FISH ONBOARD FOR PICS'
I WANT MY GOOD FITING WELDERS GLOVES...VERY SOFT PLIABLE LEATHER WITH THE ORANGE RUBBERIED COTTONS OVER THE OUTSIDE
THE CUFF AREA IS SO IMPORTANT
RELEASING BILLS ONLY .....JUST THE ORANGE GLOVES IS OKAY FOR ME
NASCAR MAY HAVE A BETTER GLOVE
BLUEFIN....I WANT THE WELDERS GLOVES AS DESCRIBED ABOVE......2,000 LEADER JOBS ON THEM AND I AM SOLD...CONVINCED ...AND WILL NOT GO VARIABLE ON THIS STANCE
I've been wanting to ask this but have'nt had the chance yet. Do you wrap on the really big fish? What keeps you from going overboard. I know you can get out of the gloves or release the coil if you wrap it right but when a huge fish surges how do you keep upright and dry? Does a normal sized man have enough leverage to control a huge fish all the time? I already know it's an experience thing but what should you be thinking doing the first time you wrap on a big fish. I know you bend knees and lock them into gunnels and keep shoulders squared to the fish. What else is there? I just picked up a pair of the Hi SEas shark proof blue gloves on clearence cheap. They any good? I work with Cryogenics so I have an endless supply of nice leather heavy duty gloves. Are they better?
