KNOTS / SPLIT RINGS
Here's one me and a bud were debating over a coldone in the garage the other night. Knots and the use of split rings (more for the inshore guys, but I would be interested in those that toss surface plugs to schooling tuna).
I use a Palomar Knot almost exclusively on my inshore rigs. I also add a split ring so that the plug can swing free without being impeded by the knot. I use the Palomar because I have never had one fail.
Now my fishing buddy says that the split ring will snag the line and chaff/cut it and I should be using a loop knot tied directly to the plug. I do know the loop knot does not offer the breaking strength of the Palomar and do know that a plug will swing free with the loop as opposed to the Palomar if tied directly to to plug... so, how do you rig it?

Banned Camp - I am on PROBATION!!
i dont take the chance.. can not say i had a problem but i did decide to go with either a very small clip or better yet with a split ring i like to use a very small spro swivel.
then i tie my line off to that.

I use a solid ring to tie too. Then the split ring to connect to solid ring, and lure.....same way we use for jigs for tuna.
I am not sure if tying to split ring is good idea, cause it can get caught on split ring, and break.

G, I'm not a fan of tieing to a split ring, not so much from chafing, witch will happen but the split ring is the weak link and sometimes can strighten out under a heavy drag. I do like the loop knot, but with big fish, I do feel that it should be reitied after a fish. I like 80 to 130 pound bite tipet for poppers and bo not have trouble with my loop knots. You are correct about the Palomar Knot, I use it all the tine for tieing on snaps ans swivels...
On my MirrOlures, I always use loop knots and with 12 pound test, I will retie after a nice trout...

if jiggin vertical I would use a loop knot/ no split ring.
if tuna poppin I would tie direct and rip it across the surface/ no split ring/ no loop knot
if I get in a hot surface bite on rock fish I would tie direct. Let the bucktail drop for a 2 count or 3 count and rip it under the surface/ no loop knot/ no split ring
GALAZIO we glassed the 54 this week. Kevlar was one of the three in the lay up. prep for fairing next
How ya been dude !!!

The split ring is a bad thing to tie to. Tie to a solid ring then hook on the split or tie a loop knot. I would tie a loop knot and tie it again after each fish. The less hardware the better.
