Just some ramblings
Funny story from yesterday about cast nets that I decided to put up after seeing some others recently that combined with some humor convinced me to post my report. Two new fishing friends, one from work, his gf and I, were returning into Lynnhaven Inlet (Va Beach) and made the turn into the basin yesterday evening after fishing for kings down sandbridge way.( More about the fishing later) One of my crew, a young man named Brandon, points at the people fishing alongside the Lesner Bridge, waves at them, and comments,"gotta wave at my peeps". I laugh for a second and he goes on to say that he and his girlfriend Daneille fish over there on occasion. One day they were down on the beach fishing, and also trying to learn how to throw his new net. Not having a whole lot of success with either, he tells me an asian guy, tired of watching him suck at throwing the thing, approaches him and gives Brandon and his girl a quick lesson. In five minutes. 10' , 12' (whatever size, it doesnt matter according to Brandon), brandon says it opens up perfect every time. Easy, got it down, no problemo now.So then to my complete surprise, Danielle, states that she can throw it perfect every time as well! And better than Brandon. She proudly looks over and tells me this while he kinda confirms it with his sheepisly with his body lanquage,,,,,,shrugging his shoulders and nodding his head, lol. I am now seriously impressed. Keep in mind that these two anglers, (kids really) dont have a boat, rarely fish and have never caught anything much larger than small flounder. Then as we near the entrance to my canal the question comes, and I am so glad I have my sunglasses on so they dont see me roll my eyes as Daneille asks me if I can throw a cast net well? I say yes, mutter kinda low "a six footer" and cough as I know now i just got bested big time by a 24 year old nice young lady and her boyfriend who are true novices to the sport we love. After we had moored and cleaned the boat yesterday, said our good-byes etc and i was on the road home i reran the events of the day back in my mind.Yesterday I had let the two of them run the boat some down to the carolina line in the ocean where neither one had ever been. I dont particularly care to run the boat all the time anyway, i like being a cockpit monkey when I can , it was slick calm and fun watching them sit together and lovingly bicker about running the boat. So I showed them how to work the gps and they asked me how loran worked and i showed them the lines and how i learned to navigate using only lines back when they were the size of breadboxes . Other topics they wanted to know about included rigging balyhoo to swim perfectly, outriggers and how they worked, bottom machine colors and their meanings etc, these kids were sucking it up and I was more than happy to feed it,lol. I figured these guys would be tired of hearing all my sea stories and stuff by now (i sure would have been, lol), but the questions kept coming and I kept talking. Really made me feel good that I had some "knowledge" that I could share and it was actively being sought after from me,lol. Well, when i get back to work tomorrow and one day soon, I will ask them both for a lesson in throw netting, lol', and then Im taking them too lunch. Thanx for the great time Brandon and Daneille, I hope to do it again soon! And as for the fishing report- it was slow, no kings , a shark , a mystery bite and a lot of small bluefish. Daneille had the quote of the day though- "well Captn Craig, we helped you pay your dues trolling for those kings today, and im going to be pissed when I hear you caught the hell out of them next time you go." But I am real sorry about the banana nut muffins I brought today, really, I didnt know ! LOL
