I guess it depends on where you live......here in the Philly Burbs when I hear a helicopter of see one my first thought is......Great traffic is F'D up again![]()
Around here the CG doesn't have choppers but the Marines use a CH-46 nicknamed Pedro for rescues. Same as you, every time we hear that distinctive beat going overhead we turn on the VHF to find out who's in trouble. Had a diver years ago get bent and it only took them 15 minutes from when I called to be literally 3 feet over my hardtop, 30 miles offshore. Can't say enough how reassuring it is to know they're there when you really need them!

also alot of MedEvac Helos in the airspace as well. Especially here in Cape May County.
I spend my fair amount of time in south Jersey.......God I wish I could make the living I do here....down there lol....we dont see many choppers unless we are out on the water being in dennisville.....when we see a chopper out on the water...we are hoping its a training exercise.....being in south dennisville, banner planes cross right over our place all day long on their way to the woodbine airport.....not sure if thats th quickest route or a pilot with a loose set of lips and binos spoke about the outside shower![]()
People used to ask me when I was going to get married, and I always answered "When pigs fly." Then one day I'm out fishing and a police helicopter goes buzzing by.... damn!
But seriously, it depends.
We have a fair amount of air traffic here since we're near several major airports. Helicopters going by don't bother me at all. They're just transiting from point A to point B. It's when they're circling and hovering that I get a little creeped out.
Last night we had a lot of excitement in the neighborhood with sirens and a police helicopter poking around with the big spotlight. That means they're looking for someone, probably not a good someone. I told the wife to lock the doors. Whatever it was was south of us and quieted down quickly, but it's unnerving. They also use them to look for missing children because it's the fastest way to check swimming pools. More creepiness.
*Disclaimer: People in law enforcement should not take this seriously, it's only intended to be humorous. And if my wife is lurking; I'm just kidding honey.
IE8 says this may be a phishing site....Well, DUH!!!!!!... Stupid jerks can't even spell fishing right.
No air traffic here once in a blue moon news copter. Not saying I'm scared of them guess I should say that I have watched a lot of coast guard videos
We fish near a Marine base and there is one in the air all day long, I think of war...It is the C130s that get me here, that the one they send out to look.
Where I live, sound of a helo usually means Coast Guard is doing an S&R op. Ten miles away in the city (Portland), sound of a helo usually means someone is getting transported by LifeFlight to Maine Medical. Either way, the sound means somebody might be fighting for their life.
So, the sound of a helo is both disturbing and reassuring at the same time - disturbing to know somebody is in trouble, but reassuring to know they are receiving the proper assistance.
A few years back one of the LifeFlight choppers ran out of fuel and crashed on a small Casco Bay island. The flight nurse, paramedic, and patient (burn victim) died. My brother hi-jacked one of the fire department's inflatables and managed to locate and retrieve the pilot. Unfortunately, the pilot was eventually sued and lost his license due to allegations concerning actions that led to the crash. Ironic, since he put his own life in jeopardy trying to save the patient he was transporting.
