Thank you for contacting me regarding the new National Oceans and Great Lakes Policy proposal. I appreciate the benefit of your views on this important issue.
As you know, President Obama created the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force in June. The Task Force was headed by the Council on Environmental Quality and tasked with developing a national policy and implementation strategy for conserving and managing the United States ocean territory and the Great Lakes. The document is currently under a public review and comment period. Some of the recommendations could lead to reduced access for recreational fisherman.
During my twelve years in the U.S. Congress, I have worked closely with the recreational fishing community and the industry's contribution to our economy is evident up and down our coast. Most recently, I worked with many groups and individuals in southeastern North Carolina on issues of fisheries management as handed down the South Atlantic Marine Fisheries Council. It is imperative that fisherman have a voice at the table when decisions are being made that can affect their livelihoods and their ability to access our ocean resources. Please be assured that I will keep your views in mind should the U.S. House consider any new fisheries management legislation.
Thank you for contacting me about this important issue. I will continue to be a strong voice for you in Washington. If you would like to receive my periodic e-newsletter, visit my website at http://www.house.gov/mcintyre/.
