    Jury Duty Rant

I had the wonderful pleasure of having to do my civic duty and show up for jury duty. I wouldn't mind it if it was once in a blue moon but in the last 29 years I have been called 7 times. I may not be able to win the lottery but I sure can win the jury lottery. 7 times and have never sat on a case. Because of my job and where I live I know all of the attorneys and most of the DA's. Many of the law enforcement people are clients of mine. On the accuesed side I know alot of them or their families because of business relationships and the fact that it is a small county. I am just fed up with the fact that I get called so often when there are so many people that have never been called.

Short of dying, turning in drivers license and giving up the right to vote,or turning 65 does anyone know how to permanently get off their list.

Here is a trick I use, it has worked three out of the four times I've been called. I walk in with a smiling face, say good morning and exchange pleasantries with the guy or gal, bring a Want Ad and sit down. After a short time when the room is full, the guy or gal comes out to the room and says "can Bill Schmidt please stand up?" I stand up and the guy or gal says "Mr. Schmidt you can go home now, you're the only one that said Good Morning to me." On the one time I wasn't excused early, I learned that it is a cross section of the jury that places you in the pool you're in. That cross section is what causes defendents to settle out of court. Only 5% of defendents make it to the judge, the rest chicken out because they don't want to fase the "cross section."

    Big Fish,

That doesn't work in NC only a judge can dismiss you. I know the Clerk of Court real well and I speak to her every time.
