Jersey shore and East River Reloacation of Vessel..

    Hello,

Looking for feedback from anyone that can offer local knowledge, and recomedation sin running a 36' Powerboat from the barnegate inlet area up to MA. How tricky is the barnegat inlet and is there any precautions I need to take while going up the jersey shore, somne once told me that if you don't run far enough offshore that it can be quite a rough ride?

Would everyone recomend running outside or would the ICW be an interesting take.. I am in no rush and would probably do it in three days...

I am assuming if ther weather is right then the conditions would not be that much different then running in MA bay or out on stelwagen bank? If I am not correct let me know.

I understand hells gate can have some strong current but beside that what else is there to be concearned with and what precautions should be taken when traversing that area?

How about from NYC throught the Long island sound up through Conn? any surprises in there?

    Any help is appreciated?

I've had friends that have gone "in and out." There are several good guides which are worth the read when going "in." Outside is easier with charts, plotters, and good weather, respecting the various shipping channels you'll be crossing on the way, NY, Narragansett, Cape Cod Canal, Boston, etc. 36' is fair size in 10-15mph wind and 2-4' seas. Coming by Block on the inside there is strong current which mixed with seas can create a mess. SW wind over 15 makes Buzzards Bay a challenge, usually everyday after 2pm, and especially at the west end of the Cape Cod Canal. Running from the east end of the Cape Cod Canal to Gloucester is an easy run if the wind isn't over 15 from the NE. Plan your trip, and then work your plan and you shouldn't have any problems.

Running the ocean from BI is the easiest way to go and not that bad of a trip if you have the weather. There is really nothing along the coast that you will have to worry about like the shoals further to the south.

Running the south shore of LI will save you a couple of hours vs going thru the sound, and Montauk is always a good layover spot. Just watch the weather if the wind is coming from the North or the West it will be a nice ride.

If you do choose to take the sound be on the lookout for debris from the VZ bridge all the way until you get out into the sound especially if there has been a lot of rain in the past couple of days.

Hells gate is really no big deal and nothing to worry about.

Just keep an eye on your depth and stay to the left of the light house around the stepping stones which are a couple of miles east of the Whitestone Bridge.

When running the sound keep a close eye out for the pots as there are a ton of them.

I can't help you past Montauk as I have never been that far north on my boat.

Get some prices for trucking it as the cost of fuel may be close to what it is going to cost to truck it and you won't have any worries or have to pay for overnight slips. It was a lot cheaper for me to have my boat trucked from FL then it was to run it up plus I didn't have to take all of that time off of work. If you want to do it as an adventure I'm sure it will be a great trip.

Good luck and keep us posted on your plan.
