Are you tryng to tell me that spending ever more on freebees to the poor and lower middle class is going to lift them out of poverty? Buddy, that's not what does it. Lower the taxes on manufacturers or maybe even eliminate their taxes. Give them a reason to build in America and that will lift people out of poverty by providing jobs and health care benefits. Please, stop with the government BS. It hasn't worked in any other country and it won't work here. I could go on, but you obviously just don't get it. Big government should hold everybody's hand and kiss their booboos. You can't tax & spend your way into cultural change and you can't legislate it either. By your way of thinking, we should jsut send big checks to every inner city household that way we could eliminate prisons. Do you really understand how rediculous your arguments are? The beauty of this country is the brass ring is available to anybody that wants it, but you have to work for it and maybe that's what makes you appreciate it.

but we by far have the same views!!

i love the way you think!!

i used to talk to an ex's mother about if we won 150 million in the lottery.. and she always talked about helping the poor and building large apartment buildings for people to live in..

i said visit harlem, detroit, newark nj, irvington nj, they will just ruin them all!

i think that is just as bad as government housing!

    Fritz,

I did not say I want national health care and I do not dispute your examples. They are just examples of throwing money at the problem rather than thinking it through. Throwing money at inner city schools where the homes are completely disfunctional does not produce results. However, there are some very interesting charter schools started by teach-for-america alums in inner cities that are getting tremendous results without additional spend. They are doing this by addressing the social conditions (read longer school days). This is still relatively remedial, but a much smarter approach than is traditional.

I am not talking about big government. What I am saying is that neither party has a rational solution and idealogy doesn't sovel real problems. And you still did not address the question I asked about why higher tax states tend to have higher economic output.

Have not been to Michigan have you? The bigger the state in terms of population the bigger the output. NJ has a pretty high output, but try visiting the democrat strongholds of Union, Camden, Jersey City, etc. Where do think the taxes go and what is the result? Government and taxes are not the answer, they are part of the problem. Incent the manufacturing base to stay in the US= Jobs and a solution. You can't keep taxing the producers, they will only stop producing, move their money overseas, and or pass the increased costs onto the consumer. Think of it as a professional sports team. You incent the star players and hopefully the bench warmers will get better or at least be dragged along for the ride.

    Fritz,

I have spent a lot of time in the midwest with mfg clients. You dynamic does hold true especially with mfg industries which are realtively low margin non-scalable businesses. I went to school in upstate NY so I know what high business costs can do to this type of economy.

However, my question referred to per capita net output per high tax state. A growing part of our economy is knowledge industries and these thrive in states with high taxes and strong education systems. Look at the biotech cluster in Boston, tech in Northern CA, and finance in NY and Chicago.

I would say we need a diversified national economy which requires us to get a lot smarter about spending less without sacrificing necessities like a much stronger education system and more efficient helath care system to be globally competitive. This is going to require both parties making some concessions if we are to accomplish it at a national level, or moving more completely different economies at the state level (something that seems to be happening anyway).

I agree it is pretty frustrating to see the govt waste at all levels and under all parties.
