I've become alarmed at the recent signals from Israel and Iran that an attack by by the former on the latter is coming, and coming soon. Here's a couple of recent items that caught my attention:
1) Mullen returned from his most recent trip to Israel virtually sweating bullets about what he was forced to say to Israel and what Israel said to him, according to reports.
He told Israel that a repeat of the U.S.S. Liberty incident would not be tolerated. This led me to look outside the U.S. media for information on recent incidents and to see if U.S. ships were in the region monitoring Israeli military traffic and movements. If you look hard enough you'll find accounts of this.
Mullen also told them a conventional attack would not stop Iran's nuclear program, but rather, merely drive it underground, force Iran to withdraw from the non-proliferation treaty and hasten rather than delay Iranian nuclear weapon development.
2) Israel, apparently, said they agree and similar statements have been made by Israeli government and military officials in the recent past; i.e., emphasis on the word conventional. The Israelis may be telling us they're prepared to use nuclear weapons in Iran.
3) Biden was dispatched to Israel right after Mullen's return, apparently, to bring Executive branch firepower to bear on the Israelis to moderate their behavior. In his first 24 hours he did everything verbally imaginable to reassure Israel in public of America's support.
Some of you here dislike Obama apologizing to the world for Bush's excesses and cringe at the thought of how diminishing those apologies were to our, well, national egos. Please read the perfectly slavish things Biden chose to say to Israel if you want to cring some more.
4) On the second day of Biden's visit the Israelis announced 1,600 more housing units were approved to be built on disputed land in East Jerusalem...a purposeful slap in the face for Biden and the U.S. regarding settlements and the U.S. penchant for putting the Israeli - Palestinian peace accords ahead of dealing with Iran.
The Israelis would have it the other way around.
5) The Israelis recently said they'd give the attempt by the U.N. only another 4 - 8 weeks to come to a conclusion of crippling sanctions on Iran before acting alone. That was a week ago.
The Russians and the Chinese, two permanent members of the U.N. Security Council are opposing further sanctions and certainly oppose crippling sanctions. So, that process is going nowhere.
6) Israel has vowed to treat all Lebanese, including civilians, as collaborators with Hizbulla (party of God) if they feel it's necessary to attack Lebanon again. Hizbulla has rebuilt it's defenses since the last disasterous Israeli incursion into Lebanon and now thought to be as much as three times stronger militarily than they were the last time Hizbulla is also now enshrined in the Lebanese government with substantial representation to the point that regular Lebanese troops have joined in military exercises with Hizbulla to defend the southern frontier.
7) The Revolutionary Guard has recently moved troops en mass to locations where they can protect essential infrastructure and dispersed others.
Taken together, these events suggest that the U.S. is sincerely worried that the Israelis will start a conflagration in the Middle East and is heavily monitoring Israeli electronic traffic. To do what, I don't know. It seems Israel is determined to pre-imptively attack.
It also seems that the Israelis are sending strong signals to the U.S. that they don't respect the Obama Administration and are willing to distance themselves from the U.S and even potentially sever ties with the U.S. over the Iran/settlement issues. In other words, we're losing control of Israel, our principle puppet state.
I think it also means there's something imminent on the horizon which will disrupt the world economies again. If Israel attacks either or both Syria or Lebanon the Iranians will certianly react as they will likely believe that to be an effort to secure Israel's northern flank before attacking Iran itself. They'll likely mine the straites of Hormuz which will rocket oil prices into the sky and kill the still falterign American economy along with much of that of the western world.
It's really getting serious out there. Maybe we're in for another Middel Eastern war pretty soon, one not of our making for a change.
