However, there's a big difference... AFAIK, the Bush refund was automatic. If you filed, you got a refund. This tax credit is only valid if you claim it on your return. I wonder if they're banking on most people not knowing they have to file a special form otherwise their liability is the same.

From the IRS website linked in the article:

Even if your income tax withholding was reduced during 2009 because of the credit, you must complete Schedule M, attach it to your return, and claim the credit on your return to benefit from it. For more information see the instructions to Schedule M. Not claiming or reporting the credit properly could affect your refund.

In any case this is still a crap piece of journalism. First, hailing that this is an Obama tax cut, when it is just a one-shot copy of a Bush program, and a deceptive one at that. Second, how many people at a Democratic Party event did they interview to determine their understanding of the tax code. Clearly the leftist slant of the article was to make people on the right look stupid. There's ample evidence i.e. Howard Stern's interviews of Obama supporters, that there's plenty of uninformed people on both sides of the spectrum.

Not from this thing... again from the IRS website:

This tax credit will be calculated at a rate of 6.2 percent of earned income and will phase out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income in excess of $75,000, or $150,000 for married couples filing jointly.
Thanks for the post Avenger. I like the details. Again, thanks for looking this up for all of us.

But, in general, it appears that there's tax savings in this instance for a lot of folks, even if they need to file an appendage page to their tax return.

OK, so you have to fill out a form to get lower taxes. I feeling is, where do I sign?

So, I think your splitting hairs on this one. It appears you're unwilling to admit that Obama's Administration has been generous to the little guy. Probably your kids and grandkids are "little guys" and benefited from this. But your partisan slant prevents you from even acknowledging the fact that they may have benefited from a Democratic Administration's tax policy.

Sad. Objectivity is not all that difficult, you know.

On the topic of the government thinking we're all stupid, not only are most people stupid as a fence post, but also, as I said above stupid has become a cherished American value, particularly on the right. There's very little reason to believe the government doesn't think we're, on average, stupid as rocks. We demonstrate our stupid with every vote we cast, for people who either represent what is injurious to us or lie about it and appear to not represent those damning things.

Lastly, you'll likely recall the post I made about liberal vs. conservative thought. I included hypocrisy among the five prevailing characteristics of conservative thought. I described hyposcisy as a trait which derived from authoritarianism and which supported authoritarianism when it collided with American value and the truth.

Your post above, although I'm thankful for the work you did, appears to be a realtively good example of the sort of hypocrisy right wingers resort to when confronted with facts.

Again, objectivity is not that difficult a trick for any citizen to perform. It actually comes naturally if one empties one's brain of partisanship.

That's fine, but since you believe that people are so dumb, and this is so buried in the tax code how many of the dolts will fail to claim it and end up owing the same amount?

When I finally found the tax rebate I posted it. Yes, there is a small benefit if you're aware of it. It's still disingenuous to call a one-time, maybe-claimed rebate a tax "cut". Even the man you would describe as satan in a suit, George W., didn't call his rebate a tax cut. I'll bet that when Obama runs for re-election he'll be claiming he cut your taxes based on this. Political double-speak is still manipulative.

Besides, my response was more about the way the NY Times couches this thing by opening it with Republican bashing when the reality is you would get the same responses from most Democrats. Leading to the posters who followed up with the "look at the dumb right-wing trolls" comments, the article is slanted, the responses fell for the slant.

With the exception of your elitist notion that conservatives are stupid and liberals, or progressives, or whatever term they're hiding it with today, are smart. You are correct.

You should look in a mirror. This is full of left-wing partisanship, as was your liberal/conservative thing. I'm not going to get into this any further since I know you'll never overcome the brainwashing.
IE8 says this may be a phishing site....Well, DUH!!!!!!... Stupid jerks can't even spell fishing right.
