Left out of AC at day break this morning....met with solid 4's and 6's. About an hour into the trip, we get a hard vibration....like something is not good with the running gear.......HOLY SH*T......yes SHIT!!!!!!!
We back the Maggie B down below 1500 RPM and start making way to Cape May. After about 45 minutes, the vibration cools down a little. The Maggie B's previous home port was the Canyon Club at Cape May. I give the service guys a call and ask if they can accomodate a short haul. We pull in in 30 kt winds and the guys at the CC are directing us to the travel lift. Within 30 minutes the Maggie B is swinging in 30 kt winds from the sling.......sure as shit.......there's about 3 ft. of 1/2 inch line hanging from the port prop. We cut the line off, inspect the gear and we're back in the water in less than an hour. I tip my riggers to Mark and the service department guys at the Canyon CLub...THANKS FOR THE EXCELLENT SERVICE GUYS!
As we headed out of Cape May inlet into 20-25 kt winds, we immediately encountered solid 6-8 foot seas with a couple of 10's thrown in for good measure as we cross the Delaware Bay. Just so everyone knows, these are not my estimates of the seas, but those of Capt Mike (aka Mako Wish on SFC).......hell they ALL looked 10-12 to me . THe MAggie B still was able to make 18-20 kts.
Unfortunately, the little detour took us out of our time window to make VB today. Didn't want to tackle Norfolk an hour after dark-30. We rolled into OC about 1:00 PM today.....staying at the White Marlin marina. We gave the Maggie B a quick wash down and had a burger at Fat Daddy's. Going over to the Bearded Clam and the Snapper for a beer tonight.
The weather looks like it's going to lay down tomorrow afternoon. The current plan is to roll out of here in the AM and make an easy day to Rudee tomorrow. Anyone in OC tonight or tentatively VB tomorrow night???
Give me a call on the cell....914-475-0051.........
Damn JD, as exciting as your trip is just getting to MHC, I can't wait till the action really begins with the fish. Sorry, about your woes bud- if it weren't for bad luck, you'd------
Be safe and will talk to you in a week or so.
Met JD and Mike at his boat in Rudee yesterday afternoon. First time I got a look at Maggie B. What a nice piece of gear. It's 1989 on the outside and 2000 on the inside. Nicely upgraded boat.
JD went through some slop on the way down to OC, from there it wasn't bad. After having a few cocktails and listening to the stories of the trip, I have a newfound respect for that hull. They should have left this AM headed for Hatteras, then on to MHC from there Sunday. I think he'll wet a line on the way.
Great to see JD again, and it was very nice meeting Mike. 2 class acts. If anyone is in HI this afternoon, look them up.
It was great seeing you in VB..... have to plan a return trip throught your neck of the woods. BTW, Mike and I have a story for you....
Anyway, departed VB at day break and got into Hatteras around 1:30 PM. Probably could have made MHC if we stretched it, but wanted to get the morning troll. It was quite an experience coming through the Hatteras inlet. Thanks Capt Mike for all your help!!....and thanks to the Hatteras Princess for leading the way out ....... at 18 kts!!
Stayed over at Teaches and watched the fleet come in....the Godspeed had 18 YFT up to 65#, plus a nice 50# hoo..... got some intelligence on the bite. Left Teaches at 6:30 AM and headed east toward the Rock Pile.... got a hard 5 degree temp break about 15 miles out and ended up in 74 degree water at the edge. Set up four tuna rigs and a couple of hoo rigs. The water was beautiful and FINALLY the seas laid down for us. ABout an hour into the troll...got covered up by YFT...... four knock downs and boated four small YFT. RFeleased all four and headed for MHC. Arrived MHC around 3:30 PM.
Talked with the beast at the dock and he was coming off a fly rod albacore trip......only got 26!!!!!!!!
MHC Yacht Basin is primed for GBFT....heard that a couple were taken last week. We'll be returning Dec. 16th for a GBFT trip on the Run Off with Marty and Brian. Can't wait!!..................
Can't wait to get the MAggie B into some Carolina fishing grounds. It's going to be a great winter season!! Anyone coing to MHC this winter look us up....Slip C-56.
Special thanks to Capt Mike (Mako Wish aka "Michael-San") for all the patience and support on this trip.
I'd like to thank JD for a truly enjoyable trip... If anyone ever gets a chance to hang out or fish with this man do it he is a really great guy.... The Maggie B gave us a little bit of a hard time in the beginning but after she got a little south into warmer water she ran excellent......It was nice to meet Tuna Taxi in V.B. had a good time over a few cocktails.....It was a great trip with great company looks like Morehead is gonna be a busy place this winter....Catch'em up guys !!!! Capt Mike
