I HATE RUST! HOW DO I STOP IT?
A plethora of hooks, plugs, pliers, and various other objects made of ferrous materials;as well as some claiming to be stainless, are rusting as we speak. There is no way to prevent exposure to salt, weather it be waves over the bow, or just plain humid salt air sneakin in when the lid is up on the tackle boxes. I would like to hear from everyone how they prevent thier HOOKS from rusting. PB Blaster, WD-40, ...The long list of chemicals that help inhibit corrosion are not welcome on my hooks. I have heard of talcum powder in the hook drawers, rice bags in the compartments,...I for one have no idea how best to save my shtuff and would like advice from some pros and ams alike. Right now I throw away anything with rust that can't be sanded off and have recently begun coloring my hooks with sharpie markers. I am not gonna color two zillion small game hooks with a marker however. My hookstock is suffering as I am idle due to a bad case of PARALYSIS BY ANALYSIS. I need input now. Help! Holwachagot!

Jeff (yea, I know how to spell yur name),
I did a somewhat unscientific experiment on this last winter and posted the results on SFC.
The result?--- Boeshield T-9. The shit works and works the best at stopping rust.

I have never heard of this "PARALYSIS BY ANALYSIS" but I bet a good black coffee will cure it. The wire used in smaller cheaper hooks does start to rust sooner than a "more expensive hook" are you talking about packs of unused hooks in the tackle box or hooks left on the fishing rod after a day of fun. I soap the whole rod and reel ,hooks and all, if left on the rod. The packs get a squirt of 3 and 1 and sealed back up. On the lures the soap trick works, rinse and dry. Again I don't store any tackle on the boat and maybe I live near brackish water and miss the salt mist from the ocean

Crab mustard is good
Stainless steel does rust...A misconception by many....If you break it down, the name says it all....the steel stains less.
I've used this product for many yrs with great success...The emitters are good for tackle boxes, boat drawers, bags of hooks, etc....Also, the rust remover and blocker works like a champ.

My best friend has a 65 footer
Here's the way we do it:
Lures/loose tools: I keep em in those little plastic 99 cent makeup trays when not in the water being trolled. All get coiled back up and placed back in the trays at the end of the day. I place all the trays in a medium sized cooler filled about 1/3 full with fresh water and a little Saltaway. I let em soak for 5-10 minutes while I'm cleaning the boat. I take them out of the water/Saltways solution WITHOUT further rinsing and let the trays drain for a little while. Then I store them inside until the next trip. My pliers and loose tools get a shot of CorrosionX. No rust issues on either for me.
Tools that stay on the boat: In a Pellican waterproof case. Inside that case, they further go inside 12x12 Ziplock freezer bags and get "fogged" with some WD40. About once a year (or whenever I can remember) I lay all those same tools out and spray them with CorrosionX.....WD40 if I've run out of CorrosionX and wipe em off. I keep a small shop rag inside my Pelican tool case in the event I need those tools while offshore...this ensures you don't have to handle a messy oily tool on the boat. No rust issues for me and I normally just buy the el-cheapo dimestore tools to stay on the boat.
Assorted other tackle in tackle boxes: the boxes go inside the house and stay there until my next trip.
I live two blocks from the South China Sea on the windward side of an island. Any metal that must remain outside gets plenty of TLC with CorrosionX. The stuff works and I am sold on it.

You can get "wink" at your local grocery store. It comes in a plastic copper/bronze color squeeze bottle with white lettering on it. It is the deal on rust stains for just about anything. Don't get it on your bare skin though.
I keep all my tools that see action cleaned w/soap and water then oil with break free whether they are stainless or not. Crimpers get stored in a crown royal bag that stays moist with breakfree. Hooks, they get soap and water and sharpie on any of the corrosion spots each and every time they get back from the boat/ocean. Oh yeah, before they get sharpied I re-sharpen all points and even use the file to knock off the areas that may be a little rusty.
Dink hooks, small circles, and treble hooks get thrown away after each trip as well as swivels after every other trip. Not worth the effort to save them and risk a non sharpened hook or a weak connection to lose a fish or have it break.
